I am thinking about a two light system for night cross rides (yes we do that around here at times) and commuting.

I am thinking 1 on the bars and 1 on the helmet. Something mid to lower priced so as not to totally break the bank.

Run time about 4 hours would cover pretty much all local rides and 2 way commutes

If you're looking for self contained, I've been using Lezyne lights for a bit now. Been super happy with them. I have the 400 and 500XL models. Work great. Not expensive and come in a kit that has an extra battery, two bike mounts and a helmet mount.

I love my two niterider lumina lights. One 650 and one 500. One would be good enough.

Check out jet lites. I haven't tried them but they got good reviews from mtbr. I am about to get a new lighting system and am strongly considering this set up.

I have a lumina 650 and a cygolite tridenx 1300. The cygolite has a nice wide beam where the lumina is narrower. So I run the lumina on my helmet, and the cygolite on my bars. They are both quite bright, I find for dirt road roads I set the lumina on low and cygolite on high or boost. I feel that you can't have too much light. Most of my rides are in the 1-1.5 hr range. Depending on how much light you need 4 hours might be tough with a internal battery light. There's a version of the tridenx with a bigger battery also.

These lights are really quite amazing for the size. I used to run two HID light and motion lights and these are every bit as bright and way cheaper.

I'm a Dinotte fan, but picked up this one recently--lighthead only so I could use reasonably priced batteries. Well designed, high quality, great value.

Urban 550 and/or 700.

Brilliant lights. I found the beam pattern on the Urban 550 to throw more useful light than the Lezyne 1000 lumen mega drive.

The L&M lights are small and light and will easily fit on your helmet or bars.

Look around, someone was selling the Urban 700 for $125 a few days ago.

Here's a good bargain option:

I've got a Lumina 600 and love it. The mount that year (2 years ago, I think) was not great, but they have upgraded the mount along with raising the light output and I got the new clamp off Amazon for only $12. My 600 also came with both a bar mount and helmet mount. So for a good bit under $300 you'd have a great setup with both lights.

Quality lights could actually save you fed reserve shopping coupons.
Just consider what it mitigates the risk of.

Take a look at DiNotte.

this light is so handy. I feel it is a great all around light for the money. if you need allot of light for single track, I would look for one of their lights with a separate battery pack. the dual lights are excellent for night time single track.

I have the Taz 1200 and a friend has the Taz 800. Both of them at max brightness are way too bright for most city riding at night. I run mine on the lowest setting in the city, and it gets about 6 hours of battery life at that level. The beam shape is excellent--very broad and even. You can see very objective comparisons of their lights to a bunch of the competition on their website.
