View Full Version : How wide of tire on Open Pro rim?

I picked up a Serotta Colorado III that is built like the Rapid Tour. It came with Open Pro rims. I want to try some loaded touring, guessing about 30 lbs. on top of my 160 lbs., so I want some wider tires. 28mm shouldn't be a problem and I was wondering if 32mm would be to wide for that rim?

If you have any suggestions of tires for this application feel free to chime in.

Thanks

Jack

Np at all. People been using wide tires on these for cx, id guess its the most common rim until a few years ago for that application. Have a pair with studded 35mm tires that ive run for alot of winters now with no issues.

ive had jack browns (actuall 33 mm wide) on open pro rims and they worked fine. i didnt like the looks of a wide tire on a standard width rim, a touring rim would have looked better

I have run MTB tires on open pros. Wider rims give you a better tire profile, but there is no reason you cannot run a pretty big tyre on those rims.

I ride either Jack Browns or Grifos on my Open Pros - no problems.

Not about the rim, but you might not have room in the frame or fork for much over a 25.

Why is this the wrong Phorum ?

What fork do you have ?

If it is a carbon F1 .... then 23 is the widest you can go ...

I've got some Open Pros with Jack Browns (34 mm) and Ritchey Crossmax Pro (32 mm) tires and they work fine. Mavic recommends 28 mm as the largest size on their website, but I have had no problems whatsoever with 32-35s and larger tires are widely used by cyclocrossers on OPs.

I ran Paselas 35mm on Open Pros at D2R2. Worked fine.

I originally posted this in the Classifieds forum but the mods fixed it for me, thanks.

This bike is not your typical Colorado III. It has cantilever brakes braze-ons for three bottles, fenders, racks, a long wheelbase and clearance for wide tires. I am going to put 45mm fenders on it, so I'll probably run 32mm tires. The rear brake bridge is only drilled and tapped from the front for fender attachment.

Here are some pics:

I like that bike, you should have fun touring on it.

Is that and IF fork?

Is that and IF fork?

Not that I know of, I'm the second owner and have the local bike shop's build sheet and it lists a "tour/cross" fork. And this is the original paint job so I guess it is a Serotta tour/cross fork. That's my best guess though, all opinions are welcome.
