So I think I'm doing a Showers Pass Elite jacket. Now I'll need a really good winter jersey. Ideas for me?
Thanks!

You have a million options but I find that Boure makes a great winter jersey at a very reasonable price.
I'm sure they will be sending out a holiday discount code in the next few days too.

I find the lightweight merino wool Zip-T's from Icebreaker, Ibex, Smartwool, etc work really well as a base layer under just about any regular short sleeved jersey. I find the sportwool (like Rapha) jerseys the best for me. I only own one long sleeved jersey and rarely wear it.

Their base layers are nice too.

My Kucharik wool jersey is my favorite piece of winter clothing.

Bob...I've been eyeing their products for a good while. What makes them stand out from the other Sportwool providers such as R---a et al in your opinion?

Thanks

The price, mainly. Name & aesthetic also.

I've got 3 Torm jerseys (2 long sleeve, and 1 short sleeve). I've had no issues with any of them, they look nice, fit well, and the price is right. I prefer my 1 Shutt VR long sleeve jersey to my Torm ones. I find my Road Holland one to be on par with the Torm ones. I've been meaning to take some pics and start a thread comparing my various non rapha wool blend jerseys. I think there may actually be an older thread on it here somewhere too.

Edit: here's the older thread: http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=100820&highlight=torm+rapha

Curious as to why you say this? I wear sportwool as a layer under my jacket when it's cold out (usually with a baselayer underneath) and it keeps me nice and warm.

It insulates worse than wool and transpires moisture worse than synthetic baselayers. It works ok for steady state efforts but for combined high-output and low-output efforts (e.g. riding your mtb to the trail, riding an hour on the trail, riding home), I find the performance to be unacceptable. Of course, in this usage, wearing a jacket is nearly impossible too.

I find a synthetic baselayer like Craft with a 100% wool jersey (Wabi is the best) is a far superior option.

i am in just the opposite camp. i like a 100% wool baselayer (icebreaker is awesome), and a synthetic mid layer. most of the stuff i use for midlayers is not cycling specific if i'm going to wear a jacket anyway, so i dont need the rear pockets. ski stuff works well here.

i just like the wool to be the layer against my skin. there are various tools for the job of course, but it's my personal feeling that synthetic baselayers are better at pulling moisture away from the skin to keep me cool, where wool baselayers are better at keeping me WARM when wet.

If I have a jacket on anyway, I don't use cycling clothing underneath. I generally just wear insulating tops. I like the synthetic poly/pro stuff personally. It comes in many different weights, is cheaper than cycling specific clothing, is easy to find, wicks moisture and works really well. Can't remember the brand but I have a few turtle-neck versions that are awesome when it's really cold.

Yeah, same. My baselayer is a smartwool one, 100% merino. Then I wear a sportwool jersey over that with my phone in the pocket. Then the jacket, which unless it's below 30 degrees, is just a windproof/water resistant shell. I'm plenty warm with those layers.

I just got a Castelli Gabba, which is sort of a jacket and sort of a jersey. I've worn it on cold (well, for SF area now that means high 40s low 50s) mornings here with just a wool longsleeve base layer (I like the Rapha ones for their lightweight weave and tight, clingy fit). If it is really cold, I add an extra wool sleeveless base layer.

The Gabba uses Gore Windstopper. I usually hate Gore anything because my experience has been that it breathes like crap. But this jacket/wool combo works really well. Even on long climbs, I don't feel clammy or soaked, and it is so totally windproof that there is zero chill when you roll over the top of the hill and begin the descent. The fit is great because the material is so stretchy it reminds me of a high end wetsuit. (It will highlight any flaws in your physique, however.). I am a cold wimp, and this combo provides the best warmth-to-bulk ratio of anything I've ever used.

Yes. Your stuff looks nice but I did have a seam let go on my Hilversum jersey after two rides. :-)
