You never know. When I worked in a shop I sold a guy a bike who confided in me he had a terminal disease. After I sold him the bike he said he commuted to and from work and thought it (riding) was extending his life. Last I saw him was last year and I swear he looked better than when I sold him the bike in 2010....

Pretty damn cool.
of my friends who bike rarely to occasionally, the thing that always surprises me is how the lack of a pump to put air in the tires is a major impediment to their riding.
Good for him for getting through that first flat tire/mechanical and continuing on his journey.

wicked read. made me happy just thinking about it. i always say that bikes save lives. i've seen the same kind of thing happen with volleyball kids we coach. getting out of low-income housing/lifestyle and making it somewhere, all because they came out and hit a ball and kept coming back. bikes like that. greatness.

mcewen has a nice one for sale in the classifieds for $30 new with shipping. :)
I've got a ffriend who is in shape, but not good cycling shape...loaned him a pretty nice bike three months ago and he's barely got 100 miles on it. Its the whole lead a horse to water thing....drives me nuts. To me, thats whats so inspiring about this story is that something as simple as a bike ride can work out that which can take a man down a path of self-destruction.
