View Full Version : Mango CK hubs - too much?

I am itching for some new wheels. I have always intended to go with HSon+ Archtypes with mango CK hubs. But since I've been riding this bike for a while, I'm now thinking that the orange hubs would be a bit too much orange. I wanted the orange bits to pop but maybe the hubs are too much with all the other orange.

So know that there are just as many people obsessed with aesthetics as I am, this is the perfect place to ask.

Mango CK hubs on the new wheels or stick with black, White Industries most likely.

the mango hubs would look great on that bike. furthermore, if you're not already running a mango CK bottom bracket, get on that.

I had the same dilemma recently- red or black hubs.

Fortunately, the exact build I wanted came up on the forums here in black. Went with Red KCNC skewers for a pop of color. That seemed to do the trick and sate the color desire.

Agreed! It would be just enough mango.

Nice bike.

I'll take the opposing stance. I love orange in all it's forms. But on that bike I think the hubs would become too "matchy matchy."

I always lean towards a bit of spezzatura if you're going the aesthetic route with a build.

I like the idea of black or silver hubs. Would let those other mango accents really pop on their own. Otherwise, it just looks like you ordered every mango bit possible from the CK catalog.

Another vote for the mango -- as long as the color is really close to the headset, collar and orange paint in the frame.

Beautiful bike. . . . .

That is a sweet bedford! Some mango hubs would be ideal with the paint scheme.

I'd go black on the headset and binder clamp, myself.

Agree with A.S. Mango all around! but I would use the HED Belgium rims.

This is kind of what I have been thinking. If I get all the mango bits, it would sort of become the "CK Mango Bits Bike" instead of "the Bedford with some orange on it".

I'm also thinking about the Hard Ano rims with black White Industries hubs.

Such quandaries we put ourselves into!

If you want it to pop then orange only on the headset. I would also go back to a black clamp

Leave the hubs black.

There are plenty of colorful bikes and people here. Hence the yes to mango ck replies. I am not in that group. Simple. Let the bike speak for itself. The headset is an unexpected spark of color and interest that resonates the panel striping.

I had a black clamp but replaced it with an orange Salsa LipLock a few months back. That clamp in the pic is a POS and lasted about 4 rides before it split during tightening. It never held.

And the frame definitely should be the center of attention of this build. And of course the awesome saddle and matching bar tape :D

now we are talking!

and, if you need an endorsement on the colourway choice, look no further than the colourway experts. in fact, based on the below, you ought to be spending money on lightweights.

I'd go Mango. I did it with my Serotta. Granted, blue is more subtle than orange. I just recently installed a matching blue CK HS and BB and you can barely notice. I don't think Mango hubs would take anything away from the bike.

Whatever you do, get some handbuilts on there. Easton wheels do not belong on that bike.

Also, I love the mango King bits, but I think you should do black.

With that said, I have a set of mango King R45 hubs I'd like to sell. 32h f/r. I'd guess they have about 1500 miles on them. 9/10/11sp Shimano freehub body....

I'd suggest a TA Carmina ..... but they are around 800 frn by the time you
get rings and a Phil BB.

Shimano cranks look futuristic.

Since you're in the market for opinions, I vote:

http://icons.iconarchive.com/icons/artbees/paradise-fruits/256/Mango-icon.png

The only apprehension I'd have about mango is (for me) the possibility that the wheelset might wind up on a few different frames in its lifetime, including one that doesn't look good with it. I tend to build wheels to keep for a long time.

futuristic could be good on a futuristic frame, but this is a classic looking frame so probably as you say a TA crank would be nice or a simple black crank, or some thing from VeloOrange or tune ?

I have seen some orange tune cranks, to be over the top? :p

Maybe you are thinking to much. It's just a couple of wheels for a bicycle. You aren't choosing a wife, or buying a house. The wheels will work the same no matter what color hub you use. If mango makes you smile, roll with it. I am not trying to be a jerk, but I get stuck in that thinking to much about something mode all the time and I recognize the signs.

why not highlight your saddle re-making skills & craft a cover which copies the orange/black/white in the panels? If you go with a black saddle, I think a white (or is it creme?) and orange (mango) stripe down the center of the saddle in similar proportion to the panel detail would look nice but would not be overkill.

Another easy detail is to add the stripes to your handlebar plugs...either with pinstripe tape or use rattle can paint & masking.

A new option has presented itself today:

HPlusSon Archtypes - hard adonized
Chris King hubs - pewter

That might pick up the Ultegra ice gray components nicely.

Ugh. Such decisions!

If its a good deal its sounds like a winner, will make the bike look very stealthy plus make your headset stick out like a sore thumb, in a good way.
