My fiancée is in Rwanda for work and she knows I like all things bike so she sent me this photo taken from her iphone. I figured it was worth sharing.

Thanks for sharing. For myself, I can get all wrapped up in so many cosmetic details I forget what a bicycle means to most of the world.

She works on the medical staff for a professional bike team but I think I'm not supposed to say which one because they have rules about posting online. The tour of Rwanda is about to happen so some teams are over there. It's a pretty cool job though, though clearly not all glamour and free bike stuff. The worst part is I don't get any free bike stuff at all - when she took the job I was sure I would be able to at least get a sweet bike at a discount but no dice.

The local teams operate on a shoestring. There was a fantastic article about the african teams and events in Rouleur a year or two ago.

That picture illustrates the reason behind World Bicycle Relief and many other charities trying to get "beater" bikes sent over there. A trash bike in the U.S. is primary transportation in a lesser developed country and can make the difference between living in poverty and earning a middle class wage.
