Buddy is looking for a mountain groupset, and I told him to check Ribble since they have crazy deals on road groupsets...but turns out they don't carry mountain parts.

Anybody know any sources for cheap mountain groupsets?

Ribble does carry MTB parts. You need to click on the BMX and MTB tab at the top to see the MTB related stuff. I did not see groupsets but they have the individual components. It took me a while to figure out how to order the SPD pedals I ride on all my bikes.

I'd check Jenson from time to time. If your buddy is a little patient, Jenson discounts a lot of their items significantly. Got some Easton EA70 seatposts, stems and handlebars for $15 each and the stem was $8.99 last season. Although the choices can limited if you don't get in on the deals quickly. I got an EA30 handlebar (wanted to see how 38cm felt) for $12 and the wing version for $15 recently.

Also got a 6600 OE rear derailleur for $45 last Black Friday and the accompanying crank for $89 with bottom bracket.

Both Wiggle and Chain Reaction do MTB.

Chain Reaction is first and foremost an MTB place.

I'm building up a Tallboy right now. I've found there isn't a single place to buy a groupset cheaply like you would on the road. Jenson has decent prices but you can easiliy beat them. Surprisingly Amazon has the best prices on Thomson (bars, stem, seat post). Bike-discount.de has lowest prices on Shimano XTR (at least brakes even factoring in shipping costs).

Take home message in my experience is that if you want the absolute rock bottom pricing then you are going to have to source from multiple places (cue 'buy form LBS').

Ebay has take-off OEM groups shipping from Taiwan almost daily. It's ~$625 for XT. Unbelieveable, in my mind.

Depends where you are, but Merlin cycles are worth a look, as are rosebikes and actionsports

Yes, when I was living in Switzerland, I bought an SLX group for a ridiculously low price. Shipping would be reasonable to North America, I would guess. Remember that they typically include 19% VAT, which is removed upon export.

I think I bought from Bike24 or something like that. Also, bike discount.de.

Cheaper than the UK, at the time.

Thanks for all of the info, I have passed along some good leads to my friend.

Now after looking at all these sits, I am considering upgrading my hardtail, which I ride a half dozen times a year, with a new XT group... it's a sickness.

Merlin seems to have some good prices on Shimano SLX and XT groups as well as specials from time to time.

None of those uk sites look like that great of a deal. You could get pretty close from Jenson or comp cyclist. Assos on the other hand seem to be very cheap at total cycling vs USA.

I was about to order an XT group on ebay from Asia when I found Planet Cyclery (IIRC) which was based in the US, and you can order from them directly or on Ebay. They were within $20 of the Asian sellers. They are currently $729 shipped for an XT group.

Have you ever bought one of these groups? Is it real stuff, just unboxed OEM?

I am on the fence about buying one to upgrade my Cannondale or just buying a new MTB but a guy I ride with sometimes bought one from "time2ride."

It came in bags not boxes, but was brand new XT for something like $550 (no brakes).

"mr_ride" does a silver XT groupset with brakes for $675 shipped from Taiwan. Takes 2-3 weeks to get it, but I'd have zero concerns. Guy has sold 10,000 on ebay with a 99.9% positive rating. Pay with a credit card via Paypal and you're golden.

In the last 2 years I have bought 4 XT groups off of eBay- parts arrived perfectly.
No packaging- and I think there were some directions- but otherwise it was a really good experience.

Usually if you use Planet Cyclery on ebay, vs their website, you can score the free shipping.

Thanks. I am I the only one wondering why you bought for groups in two years?

Between special lady friend and I, it is quick and easy to get to 4 bikes.
