While I never used one I do remember them from back in the day. If memory serves correctly, they did provide an advantage. So naturally they were banned from competition...of course they may not be the safest contraption either...

I recall the Italian 100km TTT squad used a very similar system at the World Championships back in Austria '87 before they were banned. They did provide a benefit. They would help the same way that tall lips on the rear of saddles would by giving something to brace yourself to allow you to push harder on the pedals.

You can catch glimpses of the Italians using a very similar thing in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHuh8VZbAsc starting at about 1:43 in.

It's a shame they don't have that event any more. I always thought it was cool.

It's like having a saddle with a tail/back to it. Something to push off of.

As George Harrison would often deadpan after being shown something as novel and new, "It's been done".

From the 1980's. There was something like this saddle contraption as a version for the TdF time trial stages for team Renault Elf Gitane. It was banned.

Ultra remembers the italian team aswell but so far I remember too, the reason for it was to allow them to keep the same position, so they do not move up or back. At this point too, there's a lot of contraptions created that are just useless :)

World champions in the road and in the track have changed way too much. No more 4x100 and in the track remember the per points race was over 50km, now they have that scratch crap and the per points is over like 10 or something. Helps to the show but the 50Km points race was a real hell, that was nice to watch.

I remember using either that or a similar device in some TTT's back in the 80's. I had comletely forgotten about that. TTTing back then meant cowhorns, skinsuits, and big chainrings. That thing was like an extra gear once you got it set up right. That was one thing the UCI did right, not real safe but we used it anyway while we could. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I thought that was a joke too at first.

The idea reminds me of the Concor Sprint saddle from back in the day (image below).

Here's one for sale :

Concor Sprint collectible? Wow. Gotta locate the one I rode for exactly one week, 20 years ago. If you like to move around on your saddle, depending on the terrain, not for you. The leverage is apparent when hammering on the flats and climbing, but positioning for each requires different fore and aft adjustment.. UCI banned 'em, and they didn't sell well anyway. EA blew them out at $20 or so back then.

This brings up a slightly disturbing memory of the "Butt Sticks" used by some skiers in the 1990's. Bad idea, short lived, but simply EVERYONE at Deer Valley had them... Just another attempt at substituting for strong legs. Couldn't find a picture on the interwebs.

And then there was the Seat B.A.R. Designed and built by some lads in Arizona back in the day. I had the pleasure of riding with one for a spell. Actually worked very well to maintain saddle position while climbing without pulling on the handlebars. I turned this one up while going though some old boxes of stuff recently. Wish I had a saddle to put it on. Fits a Brooks Pro if I remember correctly.
