Read the article, and then do the VO₂Max calculator…

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/31/how-old-is-your-health/?src=me&ref=general

The good news: my VO₂Max is greater than my age.

Hard to believe I came out at VO2MAX 64
EDIT
I put in 32 in waist when I should have put it in CM which is 81.28 and bought my VO2MAX down to 46. Estimated fitness age as 45, I' not sure if that is good or not since I'm in much greater condition at 68 than I was at 42. :)

I'm having trouble accepting the results when I put in my data. At an age of 51, and with my off-season exercise schedule, the calculator is reporting that I have a fitness age of 31. When I plug in my in-season exercise schedule (more often and harder), it reports a fitness age of 26 (or about half my actual age). I find this very hard to accept, based on how I do actually competing against 26 year olds.

The factors that are probably throwing this off are the waist size and resting heart rate values. While my waist size is fairly low, it's not because I'm particularly, skinny, its because I'm not particularly tall. And I've always had a low resting heartrate - but my maximum heartrate is also relatively low, so my heartrate reserve (difference between max. and min.) is not spectacular.

While I haven't read the article, they probably base their data on all healthy adults, regardless of their athletic activity. The average 26 year old *cyclist* is probably much fitter than you. The average 26 year old may not be.

In addition, their model predicts about 60% of the variation in VO2Max. That seems good for a study like this, but that leaves a lot of room for other factors not in their model.

. . . and it says my fitness age is 30. But I also don't think that' reliable. To me, at least, the differences in performance of now vs. when I was REALLY only 30 are so obvious.

The calculator also has some room for interpretation. I ride 3-4 times per week (sometimes more in the summer) but I don't "go all out" on every ride. I mix it up and will go hard a few days then take a recovery ride. But the calculator doesnt let you input that kind of training.

Like someone said above. Its not trying to compare you with a 30 year old athlete but with an average 30 year old.

It said my VO2 Max is 49....Fitness age is 39. KInda doubt this. (just moved my waist up 2.54 CM to get this number) Wish it was true. But do go all out about every day more than 30 minutes. Resting pulse is 48-50.

I'm 72

I'd be curious if someone actually knew their VO2 max and then took this test, would it be in the ballpark?

I'm apparently a 24 year-old 41 year-old with a 55 VO2max. Hmmm....

At 50, I'll take it. And no, I didn't input my waist in inches.

But I think it gave me extra credit because I'm 3/4 Norwegian.

I'm between 50 and 60. Waist 33, rest pulse 48.

Calculator says VO2max is 56

A qualification test at my employer's fitness facility last month involving a resistance bike and a heart rate measurement concluded 75. Big error bars on that data point methinks...

It is all noise, if I could ride a TT of any distance at 27 MPH I might believe it.

LOL! I forgot to put the decimal point in the right place, entered 825cm instead of 82.5! Said my VO2max was negative 200-something and my fitness age was "over 75"! (I'm 53)

Just turned 54 years old in October.

Calculated VO2 = 51 ( my HRM calculates it at 55 )

Fitness 'age' = 33

Resting HR is 48 (right now, has been as low as 42)

Max HR is about 177

I could be another 20 lbs lighter.

Just got my health screening score back and I'm 88 on a scale of 100 and ALL the numbers are better this year compared to last year.

Looks like I'll have slightly over 6,000 miles for the year by Dec 31.

Not gonna complain about those numbers. I know a buncha people who would love to have even close to that.

Conclusion: Regular cyclists in their 50s are vaguely as fit as somewhat overweight low-exercising people of around 30.

A classic glass half full or half empty question.

I got 28 thanks to a small waist and low resting HR. I never expect to be compared to a 28 year old again. So thanks, research dudes.

I was tested a few years ago at the UC Davis Sports Medical Center. At the ripe old age of 56, I had a fairy high VO2 max. Dr. Testa asked me whether or not I had run track or played soccer. I told him that I played golf in college ( All Pac-8, 1st Team 1973 ). He laughed and said that you're born with your gifts.
Unfortunately for me, I do not have a single fast twitch fiber in my body.
Bottom line, I just enjoy riding and especially on my great steel bikes with some nice, fat tires.
I just do not fit with the most current.

"Younger than 20" fitness age... I don't have to be much younger than 20 to be half my age.... that's pretty good news!
