I just thought it would be cool to own a bike the same age as me. Whats the coolest bike i can get from 1981? Maybe a cinelli sc or gios with panto'd parts or.......

Anyone else purchased a bike for this silly reason ?

I've thought about it, it is certainly an interesting concept. Would you just have the frame from your birth year or would it have components of the same vintage?

"Whats the coolest bike i can get from 1981?"

Easy, the Specialized Stumpjumper hit the market in 1981 and changed the industry.

Google image search 1981 Gitane and you will find a worthy contender.

After the thread asking for the oldest active cyclist on here, some of these guys may pre-date the bicycle:banana:

I thought you were asking about really old, like 50's or 60's. This bike still rolls with the original cranks, pedals, brakes, headset & Mavic wheels & hubs. Still waiting for those Mavic bearings to give out! I've replaced the bars shown with the original cinelli drop bars. Its a great steel ride & I have to say the additional weight (even as compared to my 16 lb bike) isn't something I notice when riding (only when carrying up the steps)

I have a Mercian that was built the same year I was born.
Here's a picture just before I rescued it:

As for 1981, I just found out from the builder that the Columbine I bought from temeyone was built in 1981.

No but I have thought about it. So you have a great idea as you are in good company! Although I was thinking more in line with collecting a certain motorcycle of the 1974 year. A Kawasaki triple cylinder 750cc two stroke. May settle for a 500cc model or a Yamaha RD350. Technically I did learn on a 1974 Honda CB200t. My first ever motorcycle.

I know you are more or less talking about bicycles though.

I used to ride around a run of the mill Peugeot that was a 1981, same year I was born. I had converted it into a single speed and beat it until I didn't feel it was safe anymore. Wow the more I think about it sounds a lot like me, I'm glad nobody has thrown me away yet though. Although the wife is trying.

I think my wife and I are both within a year,

The Colnago is believed to be an 84 and I am an 85:

I think the Centurion is an 89 and my wife is an 88:

I thought about that very thing but for me, I settled for something just a bit newer. Gained a little functionality...

The OP's question has sparked a desire. I'll soon be 53 and the goal is to have 1 bike for every year rive been alive. The collection just wouldn't be all it could be without a sweet ride from the year I was born. What was a "HOT" road race setup in 1961???? Maybe I can locate one that fills the gap.

I, like operalover and pinkshogun have a Schwinn Typhoon, '64 kickback deluxe (chrome rims). I ride mine once in a while, really a nice bike.. those s7 26 x 1 3/4 midweight rims remind me of the current 650b discussion, just right in size, the heavyweights are too heavy.. I'm a '65 but oh well close enough.. Can get on the bay for about $150 max much less with a yard sale find, with a new dose of Phil grease they'll run forever..

The closest I have is me+4, a 1961 Bianchi Competizione. It doesn't get much ride time because it's a bit small for me and is period-appropriate, which means the gearing is waaaaay too tall for me to get up the local hills. But I had it respratyed by Ed Litton, and it sure is purty.

I do have a Me+3 Cinelli SC in the works, but it is still getting repainted (it needed it - it was well beyond the "nice patina" stage) and will be Campy 10-speed so I can actually ride it up the hills around here. But it is not built up, so it doesn't count - yet.

Otherwise, my rides are Me+10, Me+21, Me+25 and Me+29.

I used to have a red Pinarello track bike that was the same age as me. I wrecked it but haven't had the heart to get rid of it yet. Its in the storage room in the back of the house. *edit: I guess the answer is yes.

Most were US cruiser type, fat tyres in 1951..also rear ders were just starting to come on bicycles. This is a pretty common design..in 1951...

The common, 40h rear and 32h front also...Jobst would be proud.

Interesting thread. Some great bikes in here. Am now curious what I could get from 1967 that would be funky. Schwinn Varsity or some such.

mmmm, ah, mmmm, never get tired of showing off the restored 'Ray Stevens'.

I am the second owner.

Ray had this race bike built in 1964, 15 months after I was born. Here he examines the resto, having given me the frameset a couple of years previously. A gentleman.
