Woah! That is serious bolt snipper, I've never seen one of those. I wonder what the putty knife is for.

Crazy.

Does SFPD have a special bike theft division? If so, that's great.

I'd like to know how they fit all that in a saddle bag ;)

Sadly, no - the Twitter account is run by one officer so spends a great deal of his time (on and off the clock) with cracking down on this problem!

Where's the crack pipe?

Actually, he's a glue sniffer, addicted to tubular cement. Picked up the habit at the LBS and has been spiraling down ever since.

sf police have posted pictures of bike thieves' tools before.
here's another picture of the tools of the trade.

Are most of them sold locally "as is" or are they stripped and parted out?

Either way, this sort of thing exists only because there's a market out there for the product that's being stolen. I wonder how often the buyer knows, or suspects that he's purchasing something hot?

It's hard to say, but I'm guessing that some of these bikes just make their way to flea markets or sold on Craigslist. Oftentimes the buyers probably don't know its stolen goods unless the ad is fishy.

I'm wondering what those RFID badges are for...

Two words for these people:

Agreed, they are low-lifes, but better that than hold-ups with a Saturday night special.

With some effort, I bet crime like this would not be hard to discourage, if not reduce significantly: a few weeks of energetic bait-bike traps, with widely publicized arrests (and hopefully convictions) followed by sporadic repeat actions to prevent recidivism, and you're good to go.

I assume it doesn't happen because there are other higher priority issues.

The first guy must be working out of a vehicle, probably a van, with tools for stealing parts as well.

Luckily, they will be increasing the use of bait bikes in SF, and we're hoping to shut down bike sales at one flea market that's a noted place for thieves to unload their goods.

Bait bikes are an EXCELLENT start. Louis hit the nail on the head in regards to effectively dealing with bike theft.
