View Full Version : Cervelo Prodigy Build?

Hey everyone, so I just picked up a Cervelo Prodigy *yes I bought that one off the FS forum* and am looking to build the bike up into something really neat. I already have a set of Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels *SRAM/Shimano* that I plan to use for the build. I'm wondering if I could get some opinions on the groupset to go for since I'm very undecided at the moment. Right now I'm riding Campy Chorus 11 and want to try something new so Campy is out.

The Shimano 11 stuff interests me but aside from that I'm not too heart set on anything. Build must have 170mm crank but aside from that I'm very open.

Idea's?

It's going to be very hard to beat Ultegra with anything on your list.

I would do Campagnolo chorus.

Sticking to your criteria: 7900 with downtubes and trp rrl brake levers.

Ultegra 11 if you must go sti.

Edit:
I forgot you can't go downtube on these frames... Ultegra 11.

Whichever one you choose you're really going to like the Cervelo "Prodigy". One of my favs.

Thanks everyone so far!

Great to hear that about your Prodigy Bob, I read a few things about it and every single one was glowing. Seems like these were some really sweet steel frames so I figured I might as well do it. It's my size so I took the leap so to speak and went for it figuring it would be just something fun and unique to ride.

It won't be my lightest bike by any stretch but it just might end up being my favorite in terms of feel etc.. Obviously only time will tell but I do have a soft spot for steel :)

vav - That's one beautiful looking bike.

OP - I voted for Ultegra 11, since I too have only heard great things about it. However, its hard to go wrong with older DA as well, in which case I'd strongly suggest 7800.

i voted for ultegra 11 as well..never a fan of the "murdered out" look myself.
i always wanted one those red and polished models like above but was kind of in between sizes.
i stumped by the red crankset, never seen one
so what is it exactly?

Agreed.

I would do these parts in silver at a bare minimum:
Headset
Stem
Seatpost
Post clamp
Hubs
Spokes
Skewers
Bottle cages

Add 6800, a white saddle, white bar tape, and veloflex master 25s and you will have a fantastic vintage inspired bike.

WOW! That red bike!

That aside, I wasn't really thinking of going "all black" on this build to be honest. I was thinking of something more classic/understated in the looks department. Have a set of Deda bars so was thinking of doing all Deda bits then Ultegra 6800?

Otherwise I was thinking of using all Ritchey WCS stuff kinda like the other build did based on the drop outs, thought that was a really cool idea...

Any thoughts? The Ritchey stuff might add just that little bit of color to the build that would be nice...

If anyone is interested here is a photo of the final bike build with weight. She came in at an amazing 17pd 10oz for a steel frame!

Build:
Cervelo Prodigy w/ carbon fork 51cm
Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset w/ included 23c tires and tubes
Shimano 6800 11spd groupset 53/39 170mm cranks with 11-25 out back
Shimano Pro Vibe 7s seatpost 1 bolt 27.2
Shimano Pro Vibe 7s stem 130mm
Deda Zero100 Handlebars
Speedplay Stainless Steel Pedals
Fizik Arione Titano Rails saddle (old heavy arione)

Sorry for the bad photo, will get it home from the shop tomorrow and will take some much nicer photo's!

...so with H2O cages and bar tape that should round off to respectable 18 lbs....really nice rig that is sure to ride like a magic carpet. I like the silver/white Pro bits.Lou

Yup, I was figuring about 18pd even once I slap some cages and tape on there. I usually ride for a week or so without the tape just to get the hood position right, I'm picky about it to be quite honest.

I purposely picked the Pro bits because I guessed the color scheme on them would go great with the Cervelo lettering and everyone at the shop agreed hands down that it 100% did!

It does look like a good match.

I would finish it of with fizik microtex and elite race cages (black with white branding)

I'm doing those exact Elite cages *have an extra pair* but as for tape I'm a Lizard Skin guy. Used to ride Fizik Micro and now love the Lizard :)

It will be black at least!

Lizard skins is a fair option. Glad you are going with the race cages. Should look great.

What a perfect built. Love the black with sliver and white accents. I need to post my 2004 CSC Superprodigy. People would be amazed at how stiff the frame is for steel. Congrats on having maybe the finest mass production steel bike ever made (but I am biased).

One caveat: turn your seatpost clamp around. The steel is extremely thin and easily cracks under excess torque.
