I just picked up an old 2000ish Hakkalugi and I pulled out the wheels to convert them to tubeless when I noticed the rear wheel spacing looks off. It currently has 105 hubbed wheels. I have searched for detailed specs on these old lugi's and haven't found much besides geometry stuff, but it measured out to 135 spacing by my ruler...

Do you think it's ok to run 105 hubs on this or do I need to invest in some wheels with mtn bike hubs?

Can I increase the spacing on the 105's?

What are the other old Lugi riders doing?

Thanks for any advice,
Mike

They were 135 mm, I checked a 1999 catalog.

Best solution would be to redo the rear wheel. What model 105 hub do you have? I've used Shimano MTB axles in road hubs to increase OLD. If you don't want to do that, you could swap the complete hub.

I just checked, they are the 5500 model laced to mavic MA3 rims. I've got a nice almost new set of vintage Gt branded Hadley Hubs that I thought I might build up to a nice set of cyclocross wheels but I'm not sure of rim choice.

How easy is it to just switch out the hub internals on the 105 to hold me over for a while?

It was very easy on the older hub I did. 5500 hub is similar, uses a standard steel M10 axle as do most MTB hubs (Alivio, Altus, Deore, etc.). If you get the right donor hub, you may be able to just swap axle and spacers into the 5500. There could be some spacer width issues depending on the donor hub. In that case, you might need some additional spacers to make the OLD come out right. Here's the 5500 parts diagram:

My old Gang Green 'Lugi also has a 135mm rear hub. I'm running a nice Phil rear hub, that I picked up at the factory and was treated to a tour!
Great bike, hope you enjoy yours.
