So I've consulted the Googlez and find opinions, but not many empirical accounts, of what this does to braking power/modulation/feel. I have a very finicky pair of tektro canti's and this is the only way to get them to stop squealing. Have tried all the posh brake pads and different washers to reduce play. Reversing the toe in towards the back on the pad makes the squealing go away completely. However, I'm doing it on brake pads that have already had a little bit of wear, being toed in the opposite direction, but plenty of life left.

Will they eventually squeal again? by that I mean, am I just delaying the braking noise until the brake pads start to wear in on the back side?

Any thoughts based on your personal experience would be really helpful.

Usually, when brakes have worn in, they stop squealing. When the pads wear out and are changed, you are at square one again.

Are we talking about a front cantilever brake?

Lennard Zinn (http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/09/news/cyclocross/technical-qa-with-lennard-zinn-return-to-cross_101807) wrote an excellent article about front brake shudder, and in my opinion its brother, squeal. Perform a Google search for his other article which addresses the issue as well.

If you're running cantilever brakes, you'll be hard pressed to eliminate it from the front brake.

Changing the front brake to a V-brake will eliminate the problem.

I also suggest trying to scuff up the side wall of your rim with 300 grit sandpaper.

a fork mounted cable stop seemed to help me with squeal and shudder

The canti's on the Surly were squealing horribly so I researched all the forward, backward, inverse align to the right stuff I could find on Google. Got them where they didn't squeal.

The other day they were knocked out when I was changing the fender, so I just gave them a good yank and put them somewhere close to aligned with the rim.

They seem to work fine. lol
