View Full Version : Virtual Teams?

This may seem a bit weird….
I’ve always been a racer. I started in the ‘70s and raced off and on through almost every decade since. I’ve also always belonged to a club/team. My old clubs, Phoenix Consumers Cycling Club and Cosmic Cyclery, are no longer out there and my local club (which shall remain nameless) holds zero attraction for me. I’m more of a dirtbag racer and they’re more “Up With People” on bikes.
I could fly solo, but I like the camaraderie and the sense of belonging (everyone needs a tribe). I also like to wear a club jersey when I’m training hard. That way I don’t feel like such a testosterone addled dick when I inevitably blow some poor schmuck’s doors off; there’s a reason I’m going fast, and it’s not (just) because I’m Type A (we all know what that stands for) on a bike. It also makes me a target, which makes me work harder.
This brings me to my question: are there any “virtual” clubs/teams out there? I live far enough away from civilization that almost any club I join is going to be virtual anyway. I’m not looking to be someone’s domestique or a patron, and I’m going to pick and choose my races. I just want to race a bit, train a lot and be a part of a team.
For a long time I’ve “belonged” to a group of motorcycle racers and general nuts from all over the world known as the “Gang of Nine” or Go9, and over the years we’ve always stayed in touch, and everyone is still a part of a FB group, meet at races, wish each other happy birthday, slag on each other…just like a real team. Has anyone out there seen this in cycling? It’d be cool to share training logs, route tips, beer selections, just like we do here, only, you know, more exclusive and bike snobby…and with cool with jerseys.

Hi Lewis:

You can always represent RUSA.
It ain't racing but you can fast if you like.
They have some decent kits.

When I'm wearing a team kit I'm ambassador for the team and on good behavior.

This brings me to my question: are there any “virtual” clubs/teams out there?

To help friends with the now-no-longer-used unattached fees I let them use my club for USCF license purposes. They raced with the club legitimately but then one moved to NM, another to CO, another to SoCal, another to upstate NY, etc. One even lives in Taiwan and although he hasn't worn the kit for a while there was a few years where he raced for the club.

I think that's what you want.

The club is in good standing with USAC, it promotes races every year, etc, and I actually have one or two members I think. Ironically I race for a local club instead of my own club since my club is now basically a race promotion entity, not a club club.

Of course I haven't ordered jerseys for 4 or 5 years now so it doesn't help you out because I have almost no kits and the last batch of kits had sponsors that no longer sponsor the club. Ahem. It had one sponsor that no longer sponsors the club.

You could buy a set of the Unattached (http://unattachedrider.com) kits. I think they're both funny and well executed. I've seen them in races I've done (to the left in the picture):

Both the Poseur and Unattached kits look great...The Unattached kit is a bit of nose thumbing...Wonder if anyone has a "Your Logo Here, $5.00" jersey?

I looked at the USAC website and followed a couple of links. A lot of teams require more participation than I'm willing and able to give...being I live way out on the ass end of civilization. The team I was most interested in disbanded in September. Nice. I live almost half way between Tucson and Phx...maybe I'll look south.

How about the X-Men?-- a roadie group in Utah. The current offering (shown in the accompanying photo modeled by a RAGBRAI buddy and occasional forum lurker taking care of business) is known as "poo and blue". Kit available at : http://xmencyclingteam.bigcartel.com/
