View Full Version : 135mm / Disc / 11 Speed Wheelset?

With shimano sending everything in the 11 speed direction, I don't want to build up a bike with 10 speed and limit my future options for electronic and hydro disc upgrades. I also don't want to go broke buying hubs, i.e., king and WI are out.

So, I'm wondering if you have any recommendations for an economical 135mm disc brake wheelsets that are shimano 11 speed compatible? I'd like to keep it < $600.

Perhaps the other confounding element is that I'm 230 lbs. Fortunately, I'm not terribly hard on equipment; but I think the Stan's Alpha's might be out.

There are older topics in the same vein regarding campy compatible disc hubs, which often end in DT with a swapped fh body. That may be where I have to go, so my second question is if you know whether DT mountain hubs are compatible with their 11 speed fh body?

I came very close to having a wheelset built with novatech disc hubs and h+son archetypes that would have been under your budget... Then I found a deal on a used dt swiss 240s 29er wheelset.

I've also considered getting some novatech hubs laced to Chinese carbon clinchers... But I keep talking myself out of it.

Velocity has some good 11sp 135mm disc hubs. Lace those up to something nice with 32h f/r 3x. A23 rims, maybe?

If you're getting discs, why not get a proper disc rim?

I'm not entirely sure what's available, I know stans do the Iron Cross CX rims which is pretty light. Perhaps a 29er rim would work?

Shimano makes the hubs you're looking for. HB-CX75.

The Iron Cross is not recommended for road tire use. Does anyone know why that would be?

IMO this is the right time for cane creek to come back with their wheels.

What Ergott said, laced to some Velocity Blunt rims, built well. 36rear and front. DT comp spokes.

As for DT, their hubs like the 350, are shimano 11s compatible now so the FH body can be plugged and played to a set of disc 350 hubs..but probably more than $600 tho.

Cool. That Shimano hub is news to me and it looks like they do a wheel (WH-RX31) as well. Based on a quick google search it seems both might not yet be available? And if the Stan's 11 speed freehub would fit their mountain hubs I would probably do Arch EX, but I don't think they do. If I can get wheels built around DT350 mountain hubs and go with their 11 speed freehub I think I might do that. Just need to investigate some more on these Shimano hubs.

Another option might be to put this off for a year or so... 11 speed is still pretty new and the options (and lower price points) are bound to expand. Just look what happened with 2 X mtb drive trains-- originally just SRAM XX which cost somewhere around $1,000,000, now available at most component levels from multiple manufacturers.

Yeah, I was thinking that as well, but I want Ultegra level anyway and the 6800 isn't much different in price than the 6700. 105 will be next logical group for an update and I'm sure it to will go 11 speed. Then hopefully there's some additional hydro disc options down the line. In the meantime, I think the Spyre's have been getting good reviews and that's what I plan to run.

I just went through some of that same searching. For now, I've got the wheels I bought here on the forum a couple weeks ago -- Novatec hubs, A23 rims. They're working well, but I've only put 70 miles or so on them (commuter) so I can't speak to durability.

Stan's says the 11spd road freehub won't fit their 3.30 hub, so I can't "upgrade" my Crest wheelset. And they discourage high pressure tires in their lighter rims. Same with older American Classic disc hubs I believe.

Other than DT, WI and CK (all fairly pricey) what I've found is Velocity, C-4 RH278, and Novatec DS712SB-11, and as far as I know all 3 of those are actually the same Novatec hub with different finish options.
The Shimano hub doesn't seem to actually exist yet, other than on websites.

Hopefully more options will come to market soon.

The last ones look like what I have on my new Crux. 11-speed, disc, 135mm spacing.

Yup - These aren't mine but I have a set of these I pulled off my Crux when I swapped in Stan's 340 Disc wheels. I'd be happy to sell you the set I have if you're intersted. They're definitely not super light, but they are stout!
