View Full Version : Newbie question on Mavic Kysrium's

So... I bought a pair of Kysrium's through the local Craigslist and thought that I'd gotten a good deal (but not too amazing  ) since the seller said he was upgrading to 11-speed while I'm still happy dawdling with 9-speed. I came home and tried to put a Shimano 9-speed cassette on the freehub and while it goes on, it feels "loose". There's a little bit of a wobble in there, and it shifts like crap. I rode it a half a block and turned around.
Am I missing a spacer or something? Did I unwittingly buy a Campy-compatible model?
Thanks for any help.

You need a spacer to run 9 speed on those wheels.

Need a spacer for 10sp Shimano, as well. 1mm?

it should be the 1.75 mm spacer (and possibly + the 1mm one)

A Shimano cassette would never fit onto a Campagnolo freehub. Ksyrium 10 speed wheels came with a 9 speed spacer. I'll look around to see if I have a spare.

One way to figure out what's going on is to measure the distance from the inboard side of the hub shell at the step to the outboard edge. You can then compare that number to other hubs that you know work for 9-spd. You'll see that the distance for the new wheel is wider than your other 9-spd hubs, which tells you that it's designed for a wider cassette. The difference between the hubs will be the width of the spacer required to fix the problem.

Never done this but a 1 1/8 2 mm stem spacer could work?

Sounds like I need at least one spacer, and possibly two. Thanks for confirming that, and ruling out the possibility of having picked up a campy version.
There are a couple of LBS nearby. I'll see if one has some spare spacers.
Thanks, all.

Yeah, when I went 10sp I found I still needed the spacer I was using for 9sp.

9 only needs the thicker Mavic spacer.
10 needs the mavic and shimano spacer.
11 needs no spacer.

Since they are used, once you get the right spacer, you should check again for wobble. Mavic hubs have an internal plastic bushing in the hub housing that wears.
