"In July, a cow killed a hiker in the French Pyrenees after it charged his walking party."
Now the limerick in Edward Lear's Book of Nonsense actually makes sense to me:
There was an Old Man who said, 'How
Shall I flee from that horrible cow?
I will sit on this stile,
And continue to smile,
Which may soften the heart of that cow.'

Related story with a potential lesson for some: I was out riding with a new friend about a month ago on some rural roads near my house. One road passes by a pasture with barb-wire fence and cows and bulls. A couple of bulls were going at it, crashing heads and horns, putting on quite the show for the cows. Naive city-boy me kept riding along and planned to stop beside the fence to watch the bull fighting action.
My new friend had grown up on a ranch. He explained that those 2000+ lbs bulls, all wound up from the fight, could run right through the skimpy barb-wire fence and gore us to death. Hmmm, I didn't know that. And my red jersey probably wouldn't help the overall situation. So we rode past quietly, ready to break into full sprint if necessary. The ride ended well, and I learned an important lesson about (NOT) stopping to watch two bulls fight.

to raise bulls to fight in a ring? If you eat beef, great, I take no issue. But tormenting the animals and prolonging their agony for the purpose of creating a spectacle is inhumane and disgusting, irrespective of its history. It's only sport if the bull has a 50/50 shot at winning.

BTW, Bulls are color-blind (so I've been told by my Veterinarian father). They charge at the motion of the bullfighter's cape (after the tendons in the their necks and shoulders are cut by the picadors so they cannot raise their heads when they charge).

People are sick and will watch / bet on nearly anything fighting, as long as they themselves don't have to feel any of the pain.
Disgusting.

This may be the only denizen of France who ever stood up to the Germans.

Perhaps a minor point, but in France the bulls are not wounded in the ring.

Please educate me. Seriously. I've been to Paris, but attending a bullfight has never been high on my agenda.

Ouch! Good one.
(Of course that's not saying a whole lot about the ability of racers to choose their own destiny.)
