the article is six months old, but i just spotted it today. if correct, there is bluetooth circuitry in the Di2 junction box. is this only one step away from wireless signals from brifter/ junction box to battery unit/ derailleurs? no down tube wire?

There's actually a tiny little flux capacitor in the junction box.

It's what allows April 1 to occur in October.
