My bestest riding buddy in Salt Lake City sent me this message and pix:

"A month ago, Elaine and I were driving down a local canyon, and came upon two bikers, a man and a woman. Look closely and you'll see the man has only one leg. It was both amazing and inspiring to watch him cruise down the canyon. It was obvious the woman was very protective of him. "

That's a special guy in so many ways...Ride On Brother!

Years ago one guy in a club I used to ride with had had polio as a kid and although he had both legs, got very little power from one of them. I was always surprised by how well he kept up.

That's the hard way to get a smooth stroke.

Last week on the way to work I saw a guy pedaling a MTB with a prosethic leg leg. I was little miffed when he carelessly pulled into traffic but quickly got over my annoyance when I got closer. Clearly this guy had a tough life.

Back in the 90's, there was an independent messenger from Brooklyn whom I used to see from time to time, when we both were locking up or riding the same way up 6th or 8th. He had one leg, rode a track bike, and was always upbeat. His wife dispatched his runs. His presence was always uplifting; doubt if he was aware of that.

I raced in a crit this summer with a guy with one arm. He was top ten until a late race flat. Dude was a bad ass.

Hats off indeed.

At the 24 Hours of Moab, the riders start with about a 100 yd run out and back around a post. I was there in '99 - the dust cleared and here comes a guy hobbling on crutches because he only has one leg. I'll never forget that sight, nor the cheers from the onlookers. His name was Brett Wolfe and IIRC he finished 2nd in the solo class.

A man who refuses to accept the word NO. I love it and inspiring too.

Wow. chapeau to him!

Makes me realize that I have nothing to complain about when suffering on the bike.

This conversation reminds me of Damian Lopez Alfonso (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/12/nyregion/cyclists-embrace-a-handless-cuban-who-wants-to-race.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0), another inspiring cyclist.

A guy with one leg only comfortably beat me when I was still young and fit on the passo stelvio. His time was around 1hr 45 min for the 1800m/26.6km climb.
And I made a habit of getting beaten in club races by Wolfi Sacher, one-armed para-sportsman. But then he brought home a complete set of medals from Beijing :)
Having seen him change a tubular en-route is a sight to behold :D

I thought you were going to remind us of our own DanLafoot. A great member for many years. I don't know the details but I have a lot of respect for the rides he has done. Look him up.

PS
Sorry Dan if you wanted to stay in the background.

Living in SLC, I'm going to guess that this guy is also a kick ass skier. Just a guess.

Enjoy your ride, with one leg or two, or none for that matter,
