Some of us would like to lose some weight before the warmer cycling season starts.

As one loses weight, does the body "burn" fat before it "burns" muscle or does it do both? How do you know that as you are losing fat, you are not losing too much muscle?

I would appreciate any insight on the matter.

Key is to be working out on gym/bike so you do not lose muscle in the process of losing weight. Additionally muscle burns fat/caloires.

if you eat a bit less and work out in a gym you will burn fat and not muscle. Cycling muscles will shrink in the winter from lack of use anyway..

One more piece..

Dont work out too hard.

Stay in your "base" zones as much as possible.

These are the most efficient fat burning zones.

Sandy - don't starve yourself, just maintain a calorie deficit and you will lose weight. As long as you have "fat to burn", your body won't go after the muscle...you know, what Climb says below.... :crap:

Work some weight training into your routine too...set goals and stay motivated. You know where to turn if you need a kick in the butt ;)

i'm no doctor but...

as long as you continue to work out while dieting, i believe you will both burn fat and build muscle. i believe this will particularly happen if you diet gradually, with a 500 calorie/day deficit. this will feed your muscles enough to continue adding muscle/strength, yet you should still lose weight.

continuing to work out will also force your metabolism to "burn" at a good rate. simply cutting calories (without exercise) will induce your metabolism to slow down.

I'd encourage you to consider looking at Crowley & Lodge's "Younger Next Year." The book gives an extensive answer to your immediate question about fat vs muscle loss.

Perhaps more importantly, the book might provide you with the external motivation (i.e., a swift kick in the keister) that are looking for.

P.S. The number of diet/fitness books in print is now greater than the number of human beings on the earth. I'm partial to the one cited above, however, because it mentions both Ben Serotta and Richard Sachs. What's not to like about that?

That's excess skin due probably to weight and muscle loss due to excessive dieting and aerobic exercise without any increase in muscle mass from weight training. But I can't say for sure.

There's nothing wrong with intense anaerobic exercise for fat loss. Fat burning happens all day long after the workout due to elevated metabolism.

It's a myth that one needs to do aerobic zone intensity to burn fat!

The reason one does aerobic exercise is to train to do aerobic activity and because the heart rate is not excessive for a longer duration and can be accomplished by a larger section of the population.

Like with so many things, I believe variety and moderation are key ingredients. I would keep the body constantly guessing on intensity and duration of exercise and try to eat fewer calories than I expend with most of my eating in the earlier part of the day and tapering off in the evening.

My guess is she is/was on Anavar or Winstrol.

Right! This is what I understand as well. Aerobic workouts may burn a higher percentage of fat during the workout, but you need plenty of anaerobic work to crank your metabolism so that you burn more fat all day. Ironically, the most weight I ever lost as an adult was when I was on a very regular weight lifting schedule, doing a combination of short sets with heavy weights and longer sets with lighter weight. Probably 3-4 sessions a week, about 45 minutes each. I was barely doing ANY aerobic excersize in those days. I never got bulky (although this is probably because I just don't have the body type to get bulky) but I felt great and got my weight down to 155 pounds. I more or less hate weights so I didn't stick with it long term, despite the benefits. The lightest I've ever gotten from riding is about 160 and I'm generally closer to 165.

So definately spend some time going hard in whatever workout you choose.

Sandy - keep your protein intake up to feed your muscles and don't forget your vitamans. Wouldn't hurt to see a sports related nutritionist if you have not already. Buy a food scale and use it. Best influence to keep your diet is to post a big picture of the Jerk on your fridge!

great ideas. sandy, rather than seeing eating as "dieting", maybe think of it as fueling your body. dieting too often is about what we can't eat, which leads to us feeling deprived. but if eating becomes about putting the best fuel possible into our bodies, the whole experience feels much more positive. if all the food you put into your body (or say 90% of it is, seeing as how we're only human) is high quality, unprocessed food, i bet it might be far easier to get lean.
