Nice,I've ridden Old La Honda and Page Mill on a road bike , different perspective off road. I don't get out that way much anymore paying for gas and leaving carbon foot print just to ride. Every ride now starts at my front door, which ain't too shabby, 20 minutes to the Ocean and Great Hwy, I can head south on Skyline to San Andreas Lake and Crystal Springs Reservoir or North towards Cliff House, lands end to Presidio-G.G.Bridge or from my door to Glen park- O'shaunessy blvd to Twin Peaks then head down the opposite end onto the haight - G.G. park- Presidio to G.G. bridge and Marin Headlands. BUT I do miss riding Woodside.

I hear ya. That's why I love where I live. That spot in the pic is just over an hour's ride from my house, and I can hit most of it on dirt.

The fall colors are only starting to show here in the NW. The rain stopped long enough today to get out for a short ride.

Foliage from Northern New Hampshire. This is in Lancaster. You are looking out from the top of Mt. Prospect, aka Weeks State Park. There is a paved road to the top from Rt.3. The view is across Jefferson and Whitefield towards the White Mountains, from left to right, Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Washington. A magnificent vista anytime of year, but particularly when accessed by bike. The park road is about 1.5 miles from Rt 3 to the top at a bit over 2000ft.Climb it if you are in the area! Fun, a few steep pitches (12% or so) and a great reward (views). Also at the top is an historic lodge and a stone tower.

Here in California, we are still feeling Indian summer, so I would just be posting summer shots. I will start to post some winter ride shots in another month or so just to initiate the annual jealousyfest. I'm sure Jack B and others from here will pile on.

the actual ride happened about a month ago but a few of us rode the 67 mile loop today. it was a combination of 60/40 off road to pavement with smooth single track, rooty/rocky almost mountain bike jarring terrain and plain ole gravel

cross bikes or touring bikes are ideal and one guy from our group with good technical skills used his road bike with 26mm tires

Hensley Lake to Eastman Lake with my friend Susan. These are both US Army Corps of Engineers facilities, so they were "shut down". However, the lure of riding vehicle free roads was too great and we scofflawed it. The lake caretaker came out and accosted us, noting that we were risking "a stiff fine" I responded with "we're leaving now!" It was worth going rogue for the morning.

. . . it was down to Ellenville to do a loop through the Catskills as the foliage reaches peak down there. I made the mistake of taking the Thruway down to New Paltz and going across the 'Gunks past Minnewaska State Park. Oops. Huge traffic and crowds.

But once I got to Ellenville way less people, and when I headed up Mountaindale Road toward the village of the same name--almost zero people and cars. Miles of wide open rural roads with hardly a soul or vehicle in sight. But no shortage of abandoned buildings. Also many abandoned cabin type camps, many religious affiliated. Or were they just closed for the season? Sometimes hard to tell.

From Mountaindale cross country to Grahamsville, then along the north shore of Rondout Reservoir and down the hill to Ellenville again for a total of 45 miles. Really superior day ended with dinner with friends.

Dave, what camera do you ride and shoot with?

BumbleBeeDave

http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/panasonic-lumix-dmc-ts3/4505-6501_7-34505783.html

Nice little camera and will survive a drop onto asphalt while riding--yes, I did this.

12 MP. Photos at 400 ISO and below are outstanding. Above 400 it starts to go downhill. The zoom range is good, from 28mm-approx 135mm equivalent. Beyond that it has a "digital" zoom which is worthless. It simply crops down a portion of the regular image, then blows it up to 12mp and applies some sort of sharpening filter which doesn't work. Macro performance is outstanding, though. The Leica lens is super sharp. I generally expose all at -1/3 stop, and leave it on normal color and pop up the saturation a bit in Photoshop if needed. The camera has GPS locator but I leave it off. If you leave it on it's hunting for he satellite even when the camera is turned off and drains your battery. I also always buy an extra one of the proprietary batteries to make sure I don't get caught without.

They now have a TS5 that's 16 mp and has wireless in addition to the GPS and also straight manual control if you want it. I'd love to have the larger file size and the manual, but don't need the other bells and whistles.

One other feature I wish it had is an auto lens cover like the little Olympus cameras. I have to be careful to always stash it in my jersey pocket with the lens facing outward. If it faces toward my body it tends to fog up, then I stop to grab a shot, whip it out, and --oops. Gotta wait for it to unfog.

The really nice thing is I just always throw it in my jersey pocket and if it rains, so what?

I bought this one ater looking at many reviews, particularly on CNET that was a comparo and the Lumix had by far the best image quality. That's the bottom line for me.

Last week, the road bike was in the shop for a broken shifter (again), so I took the cross bike out for some road/trail rides. There are enough trails around here to make for a great mixed ride.

In late August, I rode Mountaindale Rd from Spring Glen to Mountaindale one afternoon during rush hour, and I saw two cars at most. Sadly, Mountaindale is pretty much a ghost town now.

Take a look at this website: http://www.vanishingcatskills.us/essay.htm ("A photographic survey of almost all abandoned and vacant bungalows and camps, houses, trailers and mobile homes, hotels and rooming houses (kuchaleins), casinos (recreation halls), resorts, synagogues and swimming pools within a 10 miles radius of Mountaindale, N.Y.")

Psimet wheels? I have not heard of them.

BBD

www.psimet.com

Rob is a good guy. Builds a good wheel. They have been more solid than my Zipps, but they should be as they are clinchers and are significantly heavier.

He sponsors cross and road teams with wheels. Take a look of any recent shot of Laura Van Gilder, she's on them.

I'll second that with another "fall" ride pic from this past weekend that includes my fav ride partner:

First the "happy" shot of the day:

These areas are part of my regular 30 mile bike route. My regular cycling group some times takes for granted the scenery that we have. To me, it's like being in New England.

I've been waiting for the colors to turn and took these just after dawn last week. There was a nice mist on the water as it was brisk (high 40 degrees).

This is a canal that goes through the center of town and was the major thoroughfare for goods to travel up to the Hudson River (prior to trucks). Note, I used three photos merged into one (HDR) to get create this capture.

Thanks, I've been trying to work on my landscape photography this year (including buying a new carbon fiber tripod), as I have been mostly a people shooter. I took these with Nikon D800 with Tokina 16-28 f2.8. I've used various Nikon bodies since my middle school days (obviously film back then) and when I could finally afford it, I jumped to higher end digital (traded from a D3). I also have a D600 to carry as a smaller camera with a small fixed lense.

There's rumour that Nikon is coming out in December with a full sensor in a rangefinder type body, like the forthcoming Sony A7 and current Fuji X100s (not full frame though). It will be great for biking and carrying around with minimal gear, but probably expensive ($1500 to $2200 body, perhaps with a fixed lense).

I would try Canon but I have too many $$ invested in Nikon/Nikkor lenses to switch. Besides, it's the "Indian" rather than the "bow & arrow" that makes the pics (kind of like my bikes are not getting me on the Garmin team :p).

You carry the D800 when you go out and ride? That's a lot of camera to tote around on the bike. I make do with a couple of D300's, but a Lumix DMC-T3 on the bike.

Did you stroke these in Photoshop? Beautiful sharpness and tonal range! did you shoot them in Raw? Just super image quality . . .

I only rode a short distance to the reservoir (less than 10 miles) with a backpack. The D800 is a lot to carry. I should put the rack back on my touring bike to make it easier. The one thing the D800 allows is the ability to crop and still retain a huge amount of resolution. It's the reason I sold my D3 for the D800. I do wish that I got the 800E without the anti-alias filter, but it's way more $$.

I didn't shoot RAW but JPG and bracketed. I sometimes merge the bracketed shots, depending if I need detail in the shadows or highlights. My primary workflow process is through Lightroom 5.

does Lightroom do that uatomatically for you? if yo have the bracketed shots?

I'll have to try it with my D300, but my little Lumix doesn't have auto bracketing that I know of. The lack of tonal range is my one big complaint. It's just too easy to blow out the highlights when I'm shooting on the fly at ISO400, which I really have to use to be able to freeze action while moving on the bike.

Whoa! . . . Just checked out the 800 and 800E . . . Those ARE Godawful expensive! Three grand for a body?!? But 36mp? . . . . Wow.

The D800 high quality JPGs are 25MB each and the RAW can easily reach about 50MB. My 7 yr old Mac Pro is starting to have digestive problems with files that large.

To merge the shots, I use either Nik Efex HDR Pro or Photomatix. Both can be used as plug-ins to Lightroom or Photoshop or Aperture, or standalone. The merged TIF files are enormous, some as much as 240MB. Photoshop can merge too but not as well and it lacks some of the flexibility.

I rarely use Photoshop anymore because Lightroom does 99.5% of what I need. I also like the Ononesoftware Perfect Suite for their presets and editing add-ons. Very easy to use and some great new tools in Version 8 that is just coming out (currently in beta).

Not much bike riding here for the last month, except to and from tractors parked in the field. Here's a few from today, from both tractor and bike. One more day and this harvest season is history.

In the first pic, that little green spec in the field just to the right of center is a fairly big combine. We are working mile long rows here, it's sometimes hard to even see where the combine is.

I got in a few short rides on MTBs today, typical of the season. Last was over to my mom's as the sun went down, to discuss farm business.

Haven't been able to make much time for riding between nasty weather and an excess of outside work taking up most of the decent riding days. It's 24* with 20 mph winds today. Raked, mowed the lawn yesterday for about five hours, felt good to sweat. Should have taken my ride yesterday, it was a balmy 41*. Off I go for 25 miles with about fifteen pounds of wool, some of which is Rapha. ;) Made a promise to myself to get on the bike, after ingesting a gallon of Egg Nog this week. I need the workout, and will keep my promise. The story about the wimp, Meeker, got me pumped up. Will post pics later.

Read another chapter of a great book this morning. Bundled up with Giordana Roubaix knickers, Smartwool bib shorts atop them, knee warmers, two pairs of Swiftwick wool socks, Rapha shoe covers, Craft long sleeve base layer, Rapha short sleeve jersey, wool arm warmers, Gore Xenon 2.0 SO and Gore Xenon 2.0 AS to block the 25* and 25 mph winds. Wind was so strong, a DeFeet wool glove became a flag if you took it off. I was very warm, no cold spots. Today is not my kind of weather at all. I prefer it the other way, above 90*. Ice on the street reminded me of the weeks and months ahead.

A Lands End scarf took care of my neck. A thermal cap, with a new lid over it, helped keep my head warm. I find the Giro offers some warmth, too. The Gore AS jacket was overkill, but I'd rather have it on and be able to stow it away, than to not have it at all. Unfortunately it's weak point is the zipper, which snags upon itself easily. I have to send it back to CC for an exchange. My thumbs became very cold towards the end of my 25 miles, so I hid them behind the handlebar, and they appreciated it.

Headed down to my LBS, Bicycle Playground, to put down more cash on my Christmas present, a Parlee Z5, and to enjoy some hot chocolate, which Alex the owner, graciously bought for me. Cold. Hard. Not easy. Driving into massive northeast winds sucks, but if it was 90* out, I'd ride just as hard.

It was 45 in San Francisco this morning my ride was a blast love the riding here ,
Nice climbing hills everywhere views of the bay and ocean are tremendous .
It seems like 45 is warmer here than 45 in Tampa ..
S.F. Is starting to feel like my home now
Keith you are the coolest guy around

Yesterday, just as it started to rain. In typical AZ fashion, we were rained on for maybe ten minutes, all the while riding in complete sunshine.
