Hi all,

After searching for a long time I finally found the type of vintage shoes I've been wanting to buy. Just sharing this with the vintage cycling enthusiasts on this site. These shoes have a reputation of being one of the most comfortable shoes of its era. Can anyone tell me how to figure out the year of manufacture or the years in which this design shoe was made? There are no date tags or hints in the shoes themselves.

Those holes are really large. I don't know if it was before my shoes or not, but I got my shoes in... 1982? Are those Art. 74 shoes or something else?

My Detto label was red white green or something like that. I don't know if the blue ones are newer or not.

I don't remember any other model in the 80's. I bought a pair o))(f Brancales because they had fewer, smaller holes. Where did you find them?

Those look newer than mine. I got mine in 1972.

I guess mine didn't have any logo on the side. The red/white/green was the little label near the laces. My shoes in action:

To respond to the guys/gals who posted input to my question about the age of the Detto Pietro shoes.
1. There is no link for my posting. I got the picture from the seller.
2. The shoes are in transit. I'll look at all the tags when they show up for hints as to age. The original wooden shoe thing (what do you call it?) is still in the shoes. Maybe that will give away the approx. date of manufacture.
2. I bought them from a serious enthusiast in San Jose, CA. I think he said he had 4 vintage bikes. He was afraid to use these shoes. He had them for display only.

I don't see how to respond to each posting. Is there a way? Nice picture of a race. Taken in early 80's I'd guess. Right?

Thanks everyone for providing your input.

The shoes you posted, not available. At least not that version. Those are made out of leather. They don't offer them. They only offer a microfiber version(synthetic leather). Trust me, I know for an absolute certainty they don't offer them.

Yes, exactly. 1984, not sure if that was the last year.

I think I ordered the bike in Sept, got it in Jan? after the shop moved. In that picture I'd done the "aero brake cable" treatment to it, before I got the nicer Modolo brakes. 32H GP4s with Clement Futura tires. I might have the front wheel still.

Definitely Uniroyal, off of 84 in Southington (?), I remember that exit because a) we missed it one week in the BBC van and b) they used to set up a speed trap there with an SVO Mustang at the end of the bridge on the left and "pull over" cars after the exit on the right.

This was the race where I told you to take it easy, we had plenty of time, then you or your dad said, "Hey, don't you/we start in 5 minutes?" and it was 5 minutes before the start.

Come on down after the leaves are down. They're just started to fall now, it'll be a bit before it's clear.

I had these exact same shoes with the same size holes when I was racing as a Junior. It would have been somewhere from 1981-84, but I can't remember exactly which year I had them. Most likely '83 or '84.

OP Detto's

I'd love to find a pair of shoes like that but there are not to many in size 49. I never see them that big but those look big in the pic. What size are they?

I painted it. I also "added" a couple more vents, I think 2 at the front of each side row, one at the back, plus one or two on each side in the back. I also "ported" them by rounding out the inside of the vents. Because, you know, ventilation is so important. Heh.

You can't see it in the picture but there are Japanese Kanji characters around the top. I asked my mom to write stuff like Strength, Speed, etc, and I painted them on there.

I actually don't know where the helmet is else I'd have done a blog post about it a long time ago. I definitely didn't get rid of it so it's around somewhere.

yep.

I love that slight chain sag.

I'm pretty sure Ken's didn't have the white panels. It was just blue and that stuff just chipped off like nobody's business.
