I live next to a train crossing with some pretty serious barriers yet used to see people try to run the crossing all the time. Then a SUV got nailed last year and they added all other sorts of crap to the crossing so that you can't drive around the barriers.

Walkers and some bikers still go around, though and the problem is that fairly often 2 trains will be approaching from opposite directions. And for whatever reason, you really cannot hear them until they are right on top of you. That's how an older lady got nailed.
