View Full Version : To shim or Not to shim...that is the question

MY 28mm carbon seat post recently broke. Finding a replacement has proven difficult and potentially costly as that size is no longer manufactured. One alternative is to use a shim and replace the seat post with a 27.2mm. The seat tube is carbon and I have heard that using a shim may cause the seat tube to fail AND I have heard that is nonsense and just use the shim. What's the true story here? Shim or No Shim???

Get a Thomson is the size you need and never have a broken seat post again.

Shims work fine, just grease the outside face of it a little. Using one on my wife's Ti Hampsten until we can afford a Ti post in size.

Spoke with Thomson and they do not make a 28mm any longer and do not have any old stock.

Shims work, but do add tolerance to the clamp system. I hunted for a shim with a slightly oversized OD to eliminate the slip I had. Another option is Bold Precision (http://www.boldprecision.com/bicycle.htm). Surprisingly reasonable price for a very nice, fully custom Ti seatpost.

I good quality shim will work, a bad quality one will fail. Stick with ProblemSolvers and USE brands and u will be fine.

I've had good luck with the Cane Creek AL shim on my Peg. Try here (http://store.canecreek.com/p/post-shim-converter).
