That's the Brooks Cambium. ~$170.

Natural vulcanized rubber base, organic cotton and textile cover, stainless steel rails. "Ready to ride immediately" - no break-in period needed. Maintenance free. Waterproof. User-replaceable parts. Vegan friendly!

Wished they had used the flat rivets. Those will eventually chew you behind up.

Brooks rep brought one in a while ago..very rough cover, ain't gonna slide around much, if that's what you want to do...

Not sure if it will sell, Brooks trying to places that others have gone before. I think Brooks is better off 'doing one thing and doing it well'...IMHO

Not sure the 'vegan' segment of cyclists is that large.

The marketing materials they've sent me don't really play up the vegan angle. They're more selling it as either of:

- "A Brooks you don't have to break in"
- "A Brooks that can get wet"

Wouldn't know. To be clear, I'm not there. I'm in Portland this week attending to family business interests, and while away from the wife and kids, during late nights, or, as now, while slurping noodles at Sen Yai, I'm just seeing what others in Vegas have posted and borrowing / sharing that stuff here.

After a hiatus of several years, I went to Interbike to take part in the MTB Hall of Fame activities. I took with me a few old copies of the Fat Tire Flyer, the first-ever MTB magazine which I published from 1980 to 1987. My purpose was to get John Tomac's signature on a photo of him in his first MTB race.

I was trudging the floor with Chris Chance when we found John at the Kenda booth. After he signed his photo, I turned the page, and saw that there was also an article on Fat Chance, so I had Chris Chance sign that. Turning the page once again, I saw an article about Joe Breeze, so he signed THAT.

What are the odds that the three guys I'm with are represented on consecutive pages of a 1986 magazine? If you can't decipher John's inscription, it reads, "Charlie, this was my first Mt. bike!"

I shook your hand on thursday at the MTB Hall of Fame booth. That was probably the highlight of my interbike experience.

That's a pretty low threshold.

Guy comes up to me and says, "Can I get a photo with you?" Sure. His friend takes the photo and I say, "I guess you recognized my name."

He says, "I recognized you. What IS your name?"

"Willie Nelson. And you?" Guy and his pal fall on floor laughing. (As a grizzled old hippie, I get the Willie comparison all the time.) Bruce Gordon saw it happen, and gave my joke a 4.5 rating, out of...wait, he didn't tell me. Of course, Bruce Gordon's humor is so dry that you need a sports drink after he tells a joke.

I wonder if any of these new locks are a substantial improvement over what we already have? Guess we'll have to wait for some reviews. My son lives in downtown D.C and has had his car stolen three times...he is doing his best to hang on to his bike.

. . . Interbike is, at it's heart, a marketing show, and fat bikes are just the latest marketing fad designed to SELL MORE STUFF.

It's the nature of the biz--any biz. You've got to find something that makes people have a reason to buy more stuff. Mountain bikes started out with canti brakes. Then here come V-brakes touted as better and everybody is supposed to buy them. Then it's disc brakes. 26" wheels work fine, but then here comes 29" touted as better. Now 650B . . . it goes on and on.

Did any of these "improvements" really materially improve the average rider's experience of simply cruising down an open trail or dirt road and enjoy the experience of riding a bike? Doubtful. But it gives people an excuse to BUY MORE STUFF.

If you want a fat bike just wait till next spring and check eBay. There will be plenty of people who bought them, rode them a few times, then decided it wasn't for them and now they're selling. It's been the same with cross bikes over the past 10 years.

Some improvements do make the ride better. suspension and discs have completely chAnged what is possible to ride and the enjoyment of any ride

I have no use for a gravel grinder dirt road. Yet a lot of you out there do. If the industry sees a niche isn't it nice some mfgs step up to address it?

Paul's has announced their "Color Anodize All the Components" program. I wonder if it also applies to the new QRs?

Thanks to the success of the small batch color anodizing runs we've done over the past few months, we're kicking off two new custom anodizing programs today, bringing bright color finishes to our entire component catalog.

Every month we're going to introduce a new Color of the Month, and this August it's orange. We're going to take pre-orders for one month and then anodize those orders in one large batch.

If you can't wait for your favorite color, we've also started accepting orders for Custom Anodizing in the color you want, when you want it, for a flat rate of $75 per color. [Whether you order a set of gold track hubs or an entire pink single speed gruppo, it's the same flat rate.]

Check out our Colors page (http://www.paulcomp.com/colors.html) for more information, and figure out which color would best (or worst) match the paint on your next bike.

August = Orange
September = Purple
October = Blue
November = Gold
December = Red
January = Pink
February = Green

(font colors are just me messing around and do not represent anodizing colors!)

From what I was told, the QRs are only black and silver for now.

I do agree with the fact the bike biz is a biz like any other. And they make what ever they think the customer wants. Which sadly sucks. Cause they made 29'ers THE thing and of course now they are destroying that with 650's. just like with added wedge here and nuclear treated out sole there. The consumer is sadly duped into what the industry wants to give them.

so, what's the purpose of the Pave pedals? It can't be a mud thing of they're using the same cleats... I would guess merely a weight thing, but then why name them Pave? Pave invokes something that needs durability and I can't imagine those are any more durable than regular speedplay...

*disclaimer- I tried speedplays a couple times and didn't like them...

Didn't we do all the color anodizing (especially on mtn. bike stuff) back in the 80s and then a few years later everyone was making fun of it...especially purple if my memory serves me. And now GIRO is trying to bring back shoes with laces! When you get old it really is kinda fun to watch everything cycle back around. :)

I loved the color of that era (still do). :banana:

I even had a tiny little custom anodizing business in my garage during that time. It was fun. If anyone ever picked up one of the limited run of "splatter" pattern anodized Girvin Rock-Rings, that was me.

I'm still riding my mtn bike from that era, and it still shows off some of my experimental anodized bits...

As for the laces on shoes... I want that back too.
If the lace breaks in a crash, tie it back together and ride on.

My SIDIs shoes were a real pain to ride home after a crash in which the buckle shattered.

That said, I agree that it is fun to watch trends cycle through.

I looked through google images but didn't see any really good examplles. started in the late 80s...mostly seen on GT and a few others. My first MTB was a Kuwahara Lion which was white with a fade into dark blue crackle. With the retro trend, its gotta be coming around soon.
