Next year before getting back on the roadbike, I'm thinking of doing base miles on my rigid SS El Mariachi 29er with its more relaxed position.

Considered an XX1 or X01 setup, but decided on 1x10 geared. Have ordered a 30t Raceface narrow-wide chainring and 11-36 cassette, and Saint short cage RD and shifters.

30-36 is about 2" bigger than 32-42.

I've been running my hard tail as a 1x9 with a prototype ring (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=659939747358145&id=393898233962299)for the last year and love it. 34 x 11-34.

Cheers,
KP

Cool!

You announced your wide-narrow chainring right after I ordered mine. I'm diggin' the simplicity of SS, and can't get too excited about a 2x or 3x front.

Agreed. 1x is probably the best thing to happen to mountain bikes since 2007 (http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/pacenti-introducing-650b-mtb-tires-11794/). Full-sus designs are going to get really, really dialed now.

Kirk, how's the chain angle/noise in the 11 and 34?

I've thought of doing this on a road bike with a larger front ring, say a 42 or 44.

Time warp back to my old ProFlex 757. No amount of twiddling the FD ever gave me more than 2 chainrings out of 3. Love Bob Girvin, but what a monstrosity that bike was.

Luis,

I only have MTB experience with these type rings, so I am not sure how they would sound on a road bike. But generally speaking, larger chainrings will give you a better angle to both the large and small cogs and should be quiet(er). With my bike, the rubbing sound is audible in the bike stand, but I can't hear it on the trail.

Fwiw, I did run my '92/'93 Bridgestone XO-1 as a 1 x 7 and never had any issues with it.

Cheers,
KP

After single speeding for many years, a 1x9 setup is kind of a luxury on mountain bikes. I too can't see going back to a 2x or 3x setup for offroad... at least here in Ohio.

I've been tempted to rebuild my dad's old stumpjumper m2 as a fully rigid bike with a 1x9 or 1x10 drivetrain. If i follow thruogh, i would consider a dura ace bar end on a Paul thumbie.

1x9 in the summer months and 1x1 in the winter months was all I rode offroad for years on an old aluminum hardtail. I keep the full squish for weekends.
Anyways, I always kept the 32 ring, but i ride 26" wheels. I really dig the 11/36 on the dirt road bike. I'm still rocking 2x9sp 32/22 11/34 on a full suspension. Eventually I'll swap to 142 and whatever 11sp MTB setup they've got, I'm skipping 10 since it's on the road bikes.

I've been riding singlespeed and fixed on the road for a few years and am making the switch to less gears on dirt. I have a Kona that's been converted to SS (magic gear!), a Bontrager that will either be SS or 1x9 and my commuter/cyclocross bike is a 1x9 as well. Recently acquired an M2 Stumpy that will either be SS or 1x6 with old Deore XT parts including thumbies!

As the name suggests :)...I have been set up on the cross rig as such for ever...Have always enjoyed the simplicity of no front der.,

There are probably times that depending on the terrain the gearing may be a bit heavy or light but in general still spot on!! Blame the legs:)

If I ever lean away from the SS mtb it will be straight away to 1X set up...

Enjoy

Converted my fully ridged 29er to a 1x9 last year and have been loving it ever since. Honestly, I could run it as a 1x3 and be even happier.

i'm in a similar setup. wolftooth ring (36t) and xtr 11-36 out back with a zee short cage. works flawlessly.

I'm converting a road bike to 1x11 this winter and hoping to use it on some brevets next spring. A 38 tooth chainring and 11/32 out gives a nice wide range without huge jumps or holes. I actually don't expect to loose that many useable gears as there are so many duplicates and crossovers on 2x9 or 2x10.

Looking forward to Pacenti's new web site launch to acquire a 110bcd ring in 38.

Yup. I gave up on front der's a few years back when I started riding 29'ers. For all the terrain around here a 32t ring with a 12-36t cassette is plenty of range, and nice simplicity.

So I've been running 1x10 for a few years on the CX bike - 42X11-28. I'm thinking of grabbing an XT 11-32 cassette (Dyna Sys) for the spare wheelset, to give me another gear on the gravel climbs around here.

My question - do I have to use a Dyna Sys specific chain with this, as Shimano states? Is there something specific about that cassette that won't work with, say, a standard 7800 chain? I like having a quick link, and as far as I am aware, that's not an option with the Dyna Sys chain.

Thoughts?

The site (http://pacenticycledesign.com/) is up now. Lot's more pics and copy to add but we're getting there.

Probably 6 weeks (or so) out on the 38x110 rings.

Thankfully I keep my 2 x 10 geared system in which the whole transmission system was changed out today. After 5-6 hours of riding, climbing etc, you have a 8 mile climb 8-12% climb, I'll say hey good job as I pass you still riding while most of you are walking because you don't have a low enough gear. I think the 1x thing is a marketing gig being forced upon us just like 27.5 bikes but if your riding then it's all cool.

FYI I think 27.5 is way better for most than 26.

FYI 29er bikes rock the free world.

I run Bash/32/22 x 12-34 9sp on my bike, with the front derailleur max adjust screw set to allow only use of the inner and middle. I use it as a 1x9 98% of the time on local rides, but as Jack says, sometimes it's handy to have that lower gear to get over that last hill. Getting rid of the 42t was a god send though. It had enough teeth knocked off it was starting to look like a bash plate itself.

I am a fan of the 1x.Like William stated above,I could live with a 1x3 and be happy . My next rig will be a SS,looking forward to trying that out.

I have to admit that the 1X set up for myself and on my cross rig works great...When I tried to race:) it seemed to do the trick in most of the loops/set ups I encountered...

Definitely not for everyone, with limiting factor most likely your riding terrain...ie. lots of climbing...

Like the SS it can cause you to rethink your riding...

FUN nonetheless!!!

I ride single speed most of the time but I built up my old hardtail as 1*8 last year. I like it so much I'm thinking about selling my single speed!

I'm loving my 1x10 set up on my Geekhouse. Eno 34t up front, 11-36 and XO short cage in the back.

Its actually a chain keeper. Bionicon chain guide. I didn't have many chain drops before I installed it but it works well!

What's the range you're planning on offering? Really want 48/32 on my compact...
