View Full Version : Look 585

From what I read the Look 585 frame appears to be a near-perfect blend of stiffness, lightness and comfort. I also like the classic look (excuse the pun). Any comments, is it as good as people say? From what read the frame is now out of production. Does anybody have an idea as to where I can find this frame in size small? I want to build it up with 11 speed Campy and Reynolds 32mm tubulars from my current Merida.

They're great bikes! Look in the usual places - ebay, nationwide CL search, and post a "WTB" here in the classifieds once you have enough posts.

Also, look in the "Look" section on the RBR forum. I believe that there may be a Look USA contact on there that has a line on a couple of NOS framesets (unsure of the size...).

"Is it as good as people say?" - Yes. And that includes Thor Hushovd.
I don't put the same demands on a frame I did when I was racing, and never at Thor's level, but I can judge comfort. The 585 seems to have found that sweet spot between performance and all-day ease of riding.
Lugged composite? Geometry? Whatever they did, it works.
Good luck in your search - and, yes, I would say go with the small. Just confirm the effective top tube length against what you currently ride...

To Texbike: Thanks, dude, for this extremely helpful answer. I got very optimistic here now. :) To Axel23: Thanks for confirming that I am not making a bad choice here... :) I guess what is good enought for Thor is good enought for me (I will not be doing next year's Roubaix..).

If you're looking at the 585, I'd suggest putting the Time VXR on your list as well.

Both are stunning carbon lugged frames from the same era.

. . . with SRAM Red and Ksyirum ES wheels. Great, GREAT bike! Light, stiff, but not too stiff. A joy to ride and lively handling. I love mine!

I can add that I have a 585. Just got it a few months ago. I had similar expectations to yours based on the descriptions I'd always seen and heard. It does not disappoint. I'll add that I believe I have fitted myself with this Look to be close to perfectly positioned on the bike and that is step one for agreeable handling. I had great confidence in it immediately and after having a few chances to really push it on a descent and even a couple of surprise drifts across debris in a turn, it wants to stay upright and goes where I look.

Good luck and enjoy the search. Just don't rule out something similar as there are many great bikes in the world.

Yes, the Time VXR does seem to have a lot common with the 585! I will seriously contempate that one as well.

585 is a great frame. I have an older one (would call it an Origin in later years) and have an Optimum. They are both awesome, but I really love the Optimum. Fits me really well and I think the Headfit on it makes it maybe a little stiffer up front.

Really a nice riding frame. Simple, no quirks like earler Looks, easy to set up, classy, relatively light, stable, fun to ride!

No. Look quit making the 585 when the 695 came out, I think. Has been out of production for 3 years, maybe.

Edit: 2011 model year was first year Look did not offer the 585/595 frames. 2010 was last year for them.

They feel the same to me, but I might not be as good at noticing subtle differences as someone else. I'm not heavy so I wouldn't be able to tell if the 586 was stiffer. I don't think the 586 is any less comfortable on long rides on imperfect pavement. (which many of mine are)

Thanks for the link to the 586, that is a sweet frame too. Anybody knows where to get a 585 frame in size small, please let me know. Thanks to everybody so far for their input. It seems that the Look 585 is one of the highest regarded frames out there. The fact that Thor Hushovd chose to ride the 585 for the Paris-Roubaix at a time when he used the 595 for other races, says it all. :)

The only bike I ever really regret selling was my 585 Ultra. Shoulda kept it....

Look stopped making bikes in 1 cm increments about 10 or 12 years ago. That was mistake 1. Mistake 2 was discontinuing the 585/595 series.

The 585 in 1 cm increments would be pretty much the perfect bike in my opinion. I fit right between the L and the XL but am closer to the XL.

They are excellent bikes and aren't killer expensive. Try one and if you don't like it you'll get your investment back. My eyes are always peeled for another XL 585 Ultra. I still can't believe I sold it.:crap:

I bought a NOS 2007 Look 585 in 2009. It's an absolutely fantastic bike. Pretty much everything that's been said about the bike rings true for me.
Quick, but not twitchy, accelerates like a bat outta Hades, and when the roads get unpleasant, my friends on their Wiliers, BMCs, and Treks gripe about the road surface, I just pedal on with a smile on my face, enjoying the smooth ride of my Look.

Ditto what they others have said. The 585 walks a fine line of balance that many of the newer modles/bikes do not.

Guess what, I am going to France in October and just made a deal with a bicycle shop where they have a brand new Look 585 frameset in size small. The price was initially 1300 Euros, but we agreed on 1000 Euro ($1300). That seems totally acceptable for a new frame and fork (+ headset) with full guarantee. I cannot wait to get it in my hands. From what you guys told me, I am in no doubt that it is the right choice. :) Thanks!

I have both at the moment 585 and 586. They do have different feel. I like the comfort of the 586 on a century ride and I take the 585 when I need to climb. They also have a slight difference in geometry.

Congrats Jostigen. Have a 585 and absolutely love that bike. Sure you will love yours equally as much. Like the paint scheme on yours as well.

Couldn't agree more with Saab. Big mistake discontinuing this bike. I think LOOK messed up when they went with their proprietary crank and stems and even the integrated seatpost. The 585 had mass market appeal and I'm sure would be very popular today if they had stuck with it...

Jostigen - bravo. Le look 585 est un super velo!

Also managed to find a NOS last year. Size L when I really needed a size M 1/2. Rode it for 2000 km - beautiful ride but a tad too long for racing. It's now looking for a new home... Wish I could find another 585 M in great shape.

Have fun in France and enjoy the bike!

Great job finding the 585! Looking forward to hearing more about how you found it, and your upcoming trip.

I am the benefactor of saab2000's Large 585. I was having a hard time deciding between the M and the L, and finally decided on the Large with a 10cm shorter stem than I typically use. It fits me perfectly and I've been loving it! I've installed a Chorus 11 crankset since this pic was taken (thanks Eric!).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/todd4ta/Bikes/Look%20585/IMG_4338_480_zpsff415eab.jpg

I also ride a Colnago C50. For me, the C50 is the ultimate comfortable stable ride. The 585 is noticeably lighter and feels faster - a little more zippy through turns, accelerates faster, easier to keep pace up during the hills. For rides up to 3 hours, I find myself riding the 585 more often. On the longer rides, it's almost always the C50. I love them both 100%. I've found the bikes that I was wanting!

All the positive reviews and accolades here stirred up a base desire deep inside of me that I thought was long gone...BIKE LUST!!!

The last time I bought a new bike was back in 2008, that was receiving my first freshly minted custom bike by public enemy no.1 whose name can only be whispered softly in the ear so as not to create a stampede or mass panic.

Plus I have and still do, an older LOOK 281, and it's one of the smoothest rides...so I am a believer in LOOK geometry and products.

I want this bike....and I WANT IT NOW!!!...that was the last thought that entered my mind before I went to sleep last night and then I woke up this morning, looked at the sky, it's clear, we are supposed to get rain later this afternoon and the next couple of days in Austin. I decided to get ahead of the rain and do a ride...grabbed the Taylor off the hooks, man, this thing is heavy, weighs about 21Ibs wet, cleat in and off I went. Did my regular 35miles route east of town on some really quiet and peaceful country roads , the weather was nice and cool, and the bike....what can I say about the bike that won't sound stupidly exaggerated, well, it just works, it became an extension of me, I am not even conscious of its presence, notso much...got home about 2+ hours later and discovered a very strange thing happened....the bike lust is gone! I mean completely gone...I am HEALED!

What a miracle...I was also reminded of the nightmare of a string of failed relationships prior to finally deciding to bite the bullet and go the custom route....four serottas, two cannondales, one lemond, one ritchey, and several others that I can't remember their names now.

I think I better stick with what I have and be contended...forget about that woman in red wearing number 585, she is definitely not worth the risk of destroying a perfectly good marriage so far...no, never...I won't...I shouldn't...I cannot...what am I thinkin'...no, I say NO!....just exactly which part of no do you not understand? Leave me alone, go away!
I am a happily married man and six beautiful children,, we got a nice and cozy home, full of laughter, we like to do things together, go camping, fishing, watch a movie, we are just normal people trying to make the best of what we have.

Who needs another stinkin' bike??
Right?
Hello?
Right?
right.

To prevent further recurrence of bad behavior, I have put myself under 24/7 surveillance watch (http://www.ebay.com/itm/07-Look-585-Pro-Team-Carbon-Frameset-Frame-and-Fork-/231057738515?pt=US_Bicycles_Frames&hash=item35cc1d4b13) .

OK, 585 lovers. How do these compare with a modern Tarmac SL4? I rode a Tarmac a few weeks ago and was quite smitten, but pristine 585s come up on ebay pretty regularly.

maunahaole

I can't comment on a Tarmac. I have a 585 ultra in xxl and it is a great bike. Comfy and a stiff drivetrain. Quick and responsive handling, but not twitchy. Nicely balanced in a number of ways. The original build I did had a record alloy crank. I swapped it out for a carbon UT crank. The carbon crank made a world of difference to make the driveline feel more direct and connected. A 585 can be had for a nice price. Bargains are out there.
