Pedaling my new bike after work today and the chain snapped. This was ride #5 and the bike had about 140 miles at the time. New Campy Super Record 11 group.

Was out of the saddle coming up a small hill when all of a sudden I heard a loud pop, looked down, and no more chain. Was not shifting at the time.

Never had this happen since I started riding 10 years ago. Possible causes? Build was done by a local shop.

11 speed Has you get to tighter clearances required by 11 cogs you need to install all components correctly and use correct Campagnolo tools. why I am stopping at 9 cogs
Take it back to shop and ask for a new chain installed correctly

Chain wasn't installed properly or defective chain. Most likely the chain wasn't installed properly.

Yes I was also thinking improper install. Doesn't the 11-speed campy chain require a special high-dollar tool for installation? I seem to remember something along those lines when 11-speed first came out.

Brand-new eleven speed chain breaks, requires stupid-expensive tool to be installed "properly". . .

YESSS! I feel vindicated.

Or just use a relatively inexpensive "quick link" - they work great.

And no expensive tool for install. Apply chain, apply quick link, apply rear brake, apply pedal force, click.

That is what I did on my Chorus 11 speed build. IRD Snap-Link worked like a charm.

Chain not installed correctly, I suspect. Not pushed thru all the way, pin not pushed thru the 'virgin' plates, pin not peened/mushroomed.

If installed correctly, modern chains generally don't 'snap'.

Many tools out there for Campagnolo 11s, Pedros, Park..most aren't 'stupid expensive'...or use a KMC or IRD link...

This happened to me recently with a "brand new take off" Dura ace 7901 chain. It didn't snap on the connecting pin link though so it was a defective one. I stopped buying non retail packaging chains after that.

First find out precisely which link failed. If it was the peened pin then u know Sparky ur mechanic failed. If it snapped elsewhere the it is a potentially defective chain. Lou

I broke the record chain on my friends dogma once. Cost me $150. Why doesn't campy make a super record chain made from unobtanium by now?

On the plus side, you had to look down to see what happened.

Much worse if you had to look up.

Thanks all for chiming in. I was hoping to see a reply from OP since he knows what he is talking about when it comes to campy so thanks oldpotatoe!

Gonna take it into the shop today and see what they say.

you must have strong legs...or it wasn't installed properly.
