I'm helping a friend of a friend rebuild his 1985 Colnago Profil and I suggested going a little modern with the components. So now, he is looking at 8 or 9 speed ergo gruppos. Can you put a 9 spd gruppo on a 126 hub? I think the answer is "no", but not 100% sure. Do you have to cold set the frame to 130 in order to go ergos?

8s/9s is 130 mm spacing. Can ya cram a 130mm wheel into 126mm spacing, sure but 'may' break the frame..
Just have a decent LBS cold set it..easy, do it all, the time..126->130.

126mm fits up to 7 speed systems. 8/9/10 speed moves to 130mm.
Can you jam a 130mm hub into a 126mm frame? Sure, but it isn't pretty.
A steel 126mm frame can be cold set to 130mm, but should be done by someone who knows what they are doing. Best done by a frame builder or other professional with an alignment table. If no table is available, please make sure it's done by someone with experience like Mr.OP. Not all steel does well with cold setting. The thinner heat treated varieties can be vexing.

I've had 126mm frames I've thrown 130mm wheels in and I've had a frame that was cold set. Having a frame builder or competent shop cold set the frame is worth it. The wheel will drop right in and the dropouts will stay aligned.
I wouldn't hesitate to update it:

He can use the 126 hub it has now with a 7sp freewheel and 8sp Ergos. It will shift just fine, the spacing is the same.

I was in the same situation and about to have my '90 Appel cold set by Waterford ($65) but then I hit the jackpot since one of the folks here had a 7 speed Campagnolo cassette hub (126mm) that he was willing to sell.
It works with regular Exa Drive 8s cassettes (just need to take one cog out). I now have everything 10s Chorus except the Ergos which are 8s and the 7s rear hub.
I am happy with the 7s gear ratio so no more need to go to 130.

I think oldpotatoe will agree, but just make sure that the dropouts are properly aligned at 130. If they are parallel at 130, you shouldn't have a problem.
