If that's real, those folks either have a flatline brain wave or testies the size of watermelons. That cat ought to be able to cover the distance between what's on the menu, and what could be for dessert!

We have a similar environment here in the coastal mountain ranges of the SF Bay Area. As I spin along alone, going 6 mph in my lowest gear, I often look around at the chaparral and think: "I wonder how much I look like a mountain lion's lunch right now?"

Many lions here in the mountains around SLO. I ride back trails alone often and have never seen a lion. I do, however wonder how many have seen me.

Yep, as much as you're watching the road, they're watching you watch the road.

We all must remember the female mountain biker who was killed a few years ago by a mountain lion in Orange County,CA. They are out there and they like to eat. Try not to look like a prey animal. Heck this may be a legitimate reason to wear some of the outlandish outfits sold to cyclists.

The problem (for humans) is the more time these animals are around us, the more they get used to us and recognize our tendencies. Last night while I was on the back porch, a raccoon literally stalked me. It wasn't until I yelled did the animal take off. If it comes back again, I'm almost positive my yell will have less impact.

The problem I have is that on that particular stretch toward Alpine Dam I am riding an awful lot like a wounded mule deer.

is a one year kitten that just split off with momma. Her name is P-23 and she is right at 100 pounds. She is tracked on a constant basis. Thankfully I know the fish and game biologist who tracks the cats in the Santa Monica mountains. Food has been widely available since the Dos Vientos fire a couple of months ago. The cyclist who stopped to watch is an I D 10 T. One my roadie buddies came up on the scene just a minute or so later and have video of her dragging the buck into the bushes and constantly throwing out loud hisses basically saying stay the **** away.

Cool stuff.

She better learn to stay away from the road, because that's one battle she won't win.

Also, the more accustomed she becomes to humans (when idiots stop just a few feet away from her to watch the cute kitty) the more likely she is to conclude that they are supper, then after she attacks one the Fish and Game folks will decide that she's a threat and shoot her.

I saw one riding to Point Reyes just before Olema. It was Easter weekend. The lion was walking on a hill line not more than 50 to 75 yards from me. I stopped and watched it. They turned and went the other way.
