im cabling a cross bike with 105 10 speed levers. whats the consensus as to where the shift cable route....towards the outside of bars or inside of bars

Mainly comes down to preference. I route shift cables to the outside myself. Makes for a (very) slightly less acute angle.

If your bar has the outside groove, go outside. If not, go inside.

no grooves at all. its an FSA Wing bar that is not rounded on the tops so a wide platform to hide the cables underneath, think i'll go on the inside

I had the same question when i went from 9 to 10 speed. every recommendation i recieved or could find online said to go outside if it was at all feasible.

i have always routed mine to outside as well mostly assuming the smoother curve would be making for better shifting but curious if anyone actually tried both routes and found any perceptible difference?

i routed the shifter cable towards the inside to follow the right brake cable around the headtube into the top tube guides of this cross bike. shifting is good with new chain without lube so i anticipate smooth sailing and headwinds from here on

Generally shift better routed to the rear of the handlebar, for these and 6700, 7900 levers. Unless the stem is really short and you have headtube cable stops, which makes the bend kind of 'severe'.

I have two bikes with cables on the back and one bike where I put both cables in front, it works fine...but it's campy shifting. the real difference is the bar feels larger with cables on the front and back.
