So, recently i've actually been able to ride! Which has me motivated to repaint a bike.
I am thinking of a gulf oil racig colors of orange and blue and white.
I would welcome opinions as I am thinking of using the SV pictured but where it is red, there would be orange, and where white, blue. Given the small area of a bike, I am thinking orange as the base

another option was the SV cool hand scheme, seen here,

but i think the colors I am considering may be too contrasting--ie cool hand is beter with subtler tones?

thanks
jim

Orange is -- I think -- probably the best bike color possible.

That being said, given you've got some broad parameters, why not, say, send it off to COAT, give them a budget and parameters of "Gulf livery colors" and see what they send back?

Chalk it up as your own little, vaguely "Surprise Me" paint scheme.

Otherwise, some more info about the bike you're getting repainted would be helpful. A lugged steel frame would, I think, take to some paint schemes that would be hideous on a giant, MAX tubed filet bike. And vice-versa.

now I am leaning toward white with the gulf blue and orange accents
I may have to do the suprise me idea, it is just some of their SM schemes I did not like--a personal thing i know.

the bike is steel, brazed, not lugged.

I like this Baum in a gulf oil paint scheme:

Colors are a funny thing.

I've seen a bunch of gulf livery cars, and the only one that REALLY makes me excited is this one: link to pic (http://sehrgute.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/2008-gulf-aston-martin.jpg)

I have no idea why. I'm not sure if it is something they did with the finish, lighting, or photoshop or what... but many of the other cars, that I presume have the same 'color', just don't do it for me.

That said, I like the idea you're thinking about. I believe Dave Kirk used electrical tape (or something similar) to simulate a paint scheme he was thinking about. I might try that.

Dave actually had a gulf scheme on a bike a while back... http://www.kirkframeworks.com/blog/2012/12/04/gulf-racing-colors/

Painting (or a decal) on the saddle is badass. Really ties the room, errr, bike, together.

but i have no idea how to find orange and blue tape. I like the ide aof orange base, since all the others i have seen (baum etc) are blue. that was why i picked mclaren as it has an orange "base" in the sense it builds upon orange

Here's a take on the gulf oil scheme from Feather Cycles:

steelman has a couple of bikes with the baby blue and orange...here's one (http://www.steelmancycles.com/Forest%27s_lugged_SR.html)
his paint jobs seems to be modern and classy. scan Steelman's gallery and there a few others with those colors.

I'm too am thinking paint for my Ron Cooper, but I'm leaning towards a gunmetal with gold pearl and red panels and copper lettering.
