So I bit the bullet and ordered my Campy Athena alloy group for the Atlanta. I had been wanting to get a 1996 Atlanta wheelset to go with it... but I am wondering if I am better off buying some cool hubs, rims and building it myself. I have a wheel building class coming up.

The latter. Parts are tough to find on the former, and the wheels aren't that great.

New, classic (enough)-looking, modern-functioning gruppo should have classic looking, modern-functioning, modern weight wheels.

'90's Shamals would be the way to go.

That bike would be excellent with some Ambrosio tubulars on whichever shiny hubs you prefer.

Love the Zondas on my 98 Atlanta

Totally build your own. What does some factory have on you, that they should steal the enjoyment of building the wheels and the satisfaction you'd get from riding something -->you built?

Last nice (by my standards) clincher wheels I built were Daytona hubs with Ambrosio Excellight rims. Just ordered another pair of the rims today, but could only find them in 28 drilling.

These are not nearly as tall as an Atlanta 96 but are 40 g lighter and double eyeleted. They've been around since the late 1990s, so kind of bridge the gap between the age of your frame and the modern Athena group, although the decals have changed.

I hope this isn't too far off the OP's area of interest, if so I apologize. I'd like to know what people feel is the best value in a 28 hole hubset. I'd say Record in 32, but don't know much about the reasonably priced 28 hole options. Kings, Whites, DTs are out of my price range. I'm leaning toward Ambrosio Zeniths over Miche and the various Taiwan brands. With Zentiths, Excellights and 14/15s the rear should be sub 900 g and the front under 750g; total cost of the pair under $300.

In it's day, the Atlanta had a fairly radical Campy wheelset, and I believe you were talking about some 8 speedy these:

Old school frame.
Modern, but, alloy gruppo.
New fly Campy wheels is my vote. Modern, light, fast. Make biking more fun, with flair, that echoes the past ala:

Or Eurus, Zonda, Scirocco.

A new set of Neutrons or Zonda's will ride way, way better than the Atlantas.

Build a set of wheels. DT 440 RR rims are fabulous for a classic, yet modern rim.

yah.. I am just trying to get away from the black rims and go to all silver/anodized/alloy look. I can go with black, but I just think it would look cooler the other way, with a polished hub.

Velocity Race hub, or White hub or Miche hubs(all sinlver), laced to H+Son TB-14, polished..pretty keen.

Ok, I went with the H Plus Son TB14 polished and the White Industries T11 front and rear polished. All 32 hole, Campy drivetrain.

I have the polished H Plus Son Archetype rims 28/32 sitting in the garage. Likely go with the WI hubs also.

I think you picked a good combo for all silver wheels.

Do you like the Miche hubs? Have you seen the Ambrosios? I think the Miche might be lighter (weight I've seen listed includes skewer, Ambrosio's doesn't), but I don't really like the coarse machined look of Miche.

I have the Miche Racing Box hubs on my Campy equipped bike and like them very much. My other, SRAM equipped, bike has DT Swiss 240S hubs. The Miche hubs roll just as nicely as the DT Swiss, with the added bonus of being quieter when I'm coasting. I also prefer how the Miche hub engages when you start pedaling again. The Miche are heavier than my 240S, but the way I ride, that doesn't really matter! :-D

i squirt some phils tenacious oil in the ratchet system, quiets them down to near silence.

I have the shiny H plus Son rims built on a pair of silver Campy record 10 hubs...they're great, and they are a nice addition to the campy athena 11 group on my Pinarello.

I sell 'em...the Miche.

OK, I like the Velocity hubs also.
