Thinking a 6800 crank would be a nice addition to my gravel grinder(the ease of ring options would be cool) and as my 10 speed stash dwindles I can upgrade to 11, already "future proofed" the hub.

What say you?

I say probably fine. Using a narrower chain than is intended is where you can have problems.

Works fine on 10s stuff(opposite not as well...11s shifters and 10s crank, for shimano)but you 'may' want to check chainring prices..these, like 9000 rings, aren't cheap.

Match chain to cogset, not chainrings, BTW-

Makes sense! I had thought of the prices, but I was figuring they'd come down when everyone switches to 12....:) sorta like the cheap 7900 stuff right now.
Thanks for opinions you two, I guess I should have said it was going on a Serotta in order to foster more opinions!

I must have the only 7 speed, 116 mm BCD gravel bike in existence. It is a good excuse for my slow pace, so I don't see 11 cogs in its future.

Just curious, has anyone worn out a 7900/6700 chainring?
