View Full Version : Riding jacket made out of Schoeller soft shell fabric?

I've had a couple of general use shell jackets made out of the "Schoeller" type fabric. It's a cordura-like stretch fabric with a really tight knit and a water resistant surface treatment. It provides no insulation, but it's pretty wind resistant and breathable.
I know a lot of bike clothing folks make riding jackets out of this type of fabric, but under a lot of different names. This makes it hard to do a search. Can anyone point me toward some good, bang for the buck choices? "Winter" (I live in AZ) is coming.
Rapha = no.

Schoeller is a textile company, so they make lots of fabrics. Are you thinking of Dryskin. Schoeller Dryskin is probably the most popular of their fabrics for riding jackets.

This is a cool jacket with the body made of Dryskin and the arms of a more permeable material.

Patagonia uses their fabric for a couple of jackets with a brushed lining. Good over long underwear down to probably 45, lower with another insul. layer.
Not particularly light, but durable.

Gore makes a least a couple with "Schoeller" type material. I have one but damned if I can remember what model it is. It is very similar to another jacket I have that is made of Schoeller.

I think that's the one. Like I said, a lot of different companies make decent imtations of this fabric. I now have a Mountain Hardwear jacket made out of an imitation that I wore the hell out of last winter. My general go-to jacket.

Pearl Izumi makes a lot of great stuff. Look for sales - competitive cyclist/backcountry had a lot on sale earlier this summer. There are a lot of good fabrics out there right now.

Mission workshop has the trigger. I used it last year but it is only a shell. Really nice jacket, well built in Canada.

Not cycling specific, but my Marmot Driclime Windshirt is my favorite piece of clothing for cold, damp days. You can probably pick one up for $60. Hard to go wrong in my opinion. Completely bomber.

MW also makes the Orion (http://missionworkshop.com/products/apparel/jacket/waterproof-orion.php). Crazy expensive, but supposed to be a 'lifetime' kind of jacket.
Debating getting it myself. One jacket for one and off the bike, that works well and lasts forever, might be worth that cost if I can get 7 or 8 years out of it.

I love my Driclime (both windshirt and hooded), it's my go to hiking/backpacking jacket...but...they are barely water resistant.
If the forecast includes rain, I include eVent (EB FA or Westcomb for hiking).
I have the Sugoi eVent cycling jacket...but...it's not very packable at all. I also have a Campy TXN jacket that is more packable...but...not very waterproof (despite claims).
If it's warm out I don't really sweat the rain too much.

Here is AZ, if it looks like rain, I ride the trainer and go out for a long one tomorrow. Doesn't rain enough to have a rain jacket on a ride.
The wind shirt..."club or race" fit? I'd rather not get one that's too baggy...and I can't size down. Think of me as a "long medium" in everyday clothing.

Showers pass makes some great gear.

I wouldn't wear the Driclime on the bike.
The Sugoi eVent jacket is a nice fitted piece. I modded it by adding a velcro'd Showers Pass hood...FWIW.
Lewis...you're in AZ...ride on thru the rain and dry off in short order.

I have one of those. Didn't get wet during a 2+ hr rain/snow ride last winter.
Lots of thumbs up
