My Dad reminded me that today is the anniversary of Elvis' death...he would have been 78.

I was working the midnight shift at my Summer job in a steel mill and I just made it in on time to start the shift. The crew that I was paired with for the Summer were all millwrights, lifers as we called them, all about my Dad's age at the time, and they usually gave me a friendly ration of --it every day just for being a "college kid".

Expecting some abuse for rolling in at the last minute, the crew were eerliy quiet. After a moment, after inquiring about their silence, our crew leader Wayne looked up and said, "Haven't you heard...the King is gone."

I bet he didn't care for narrow Q factor.

Another great one lost to the addiction of drugs, prescribed by doctors, abused by The King. He should still be singing.

36 years ago he died, though I have to admit I don't really remember it.

... saw the King in his penultimate concert in Fort Wayne, IN. My girlfriend at the time worked as an executive assistant to the manager of the arena where the concert was held; I actually met Elvis behind stage and we had second row seats center stage. We never saw him during his first song because of the hoard of women who rushed the stage.

Even though he was overweight at the time, it was still an electrifying event. I remember looking around the arena and everyone present was totally focused on the act; I've never witnessed anything like it since.

Because of my access to the event, I parked my car in the arena basement beside the limo used to ferry Elvis. When we left, I simply pulled-in behind the limo and drove through town following the police escort.

What a show.

I remember it very well. What a shock, and yes, he was fat Elvis. What a shame that he went wacko and died drug addicted and constipated. I still love his music, especially the gospel songs.

I remember I was working in the afternoon after high school at a local bike shop. Standing at my workbench in shock when the news came over the radio.

I was in the car driving to Silver Spring, MD when I heard it. Never forget it. Another victim of commercialism.

And food.

He, and many of his era (Jackie Wilson, The Supremes, Jackson5 etc.) have been a pretty big reason I've been obsessed with music, since I was 7, to this minute. Big loss, for many, still felt today.

Reading Keith Richards' book "Life" lately. He said Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel changed his life. He'd never heard music like that before, stripped down and raw.

In many of his early songs, you hear in his voice the pure joy that the first years of rock n roll were capable of. I always smile when I hear them.

We were talking about music around the dinner table last night and the subject of Elvis passing away came up...one if the kids heard it on the news....37 years ago today. I told them that Elvis and James Brown influenced more performers that they knew possible. My youngest son sent this gif to me this morning...awesome, so I reopened the old thread.
