Above is a link to an FDA recall for IAMS and Eukanuba dry dog and cat food. I know a lot of you own pets and this would be a sucky way to lose him or her.

Thanks Richard! Scary stuff! My GF two cats but luckily uses small brand natural food. We have a lot of friends with pets that I will forward this to!

There are constant dog and cat food recalls going on. California Natural and Innova are just recovering from a salmonella contamination of their foods and had everything off the shelf. We see enough recalls with human food; there are more with pet food. They just don't make the New York Times.

The funny thing with the IAMs/Eukanuba and Natura (Innova, California Naturals, Evo) recalls is that they are both owned by Procter and Gamble.

Interesting.

For New Englanders there's a company Blue Seal which is local, they produce and bag their food around here (I'm pretty sure of that). They're mainly larger animal feed - horses, goats, stuff like that - but they have a line of dog food and a very small assortment of cat food. Although we don't use the cat food (our cats don't like it, and they only have two varieties) they have a more extensive dog food line. The store where I used to work, their two daughters buy Blue Seal for their dogs and a local vet buys it for his own dogs (neither get the food for free).

Thanks Richard;

The cat's actually been under the weather lately, from about the time I bought the last bag of Iams. Tossed out the bag yesterday and she's off to the Vet this morning. She's probably perfectly fine, but I'm glad of the info.

Our cats (3) are pretty picky eaters - Science Diet dry or Frisky's Shreds (canned)

They won 't touch any if the natural stuff - we tried

Good info from OP - thanks for sharing

This unfortunately is pretty common.

I own a pet care company and one constant for our pet care specialists is to always wash hands after handling pet food......and keep pet food off commonly used people food prep surfaces.

Roommate's dog has been sick this past week (vomit, diarrhea) and I just checked downstairs and he is eating Iams food...

Thanks for this.

That Natura recall was *twice*...apparenetly they thought they had the situation handled and released pet food back into the market, and then recalled it again.

I don't believe Natura ever had a pet food recall when they were independent, but once they got acquired by P&G, problems started. They claimed that nothing changed (same manufacturing facility) post acquisition by P&G, but two recalls makes you wonder.

If you want to take P&G's side, it is because of their rigorous testing. On the other hand.......
Makes you go hmmmm.

I give my 15 year old cat Nine Lives dry food and he likes the ground up wet can food (same brand). Anybody here have any comments on that? He seems to be healthy and happy knock on wood.

Thanks for the info. Iams is our brand of cat food, and fortunately both bags are OK. So are the cats.
