Not a huge fan of the bike, but this thing has style. One of the best paint schemes I've ever seen.

German racing white with the german colors. Agree that it is a very classy paint job.

I think I'm like 1/32 German, so it would be hard for me to pull off. Of course, you could just say it was Belgian.... I think all cyclists are Belgian in spirit.

gotta love Jens. I have the iPhone app with recordings of some of his famous one-liners. Sometimes you just needs Jens' voice to put things in perspective--he knows how to go hard without taking himself too seriously.

They should have another one that reads "11,11,11,11,11,11,11,11,11,11,12".

That a Peace Race dove on the headtube? Or am I losing it?

Paint scheme would be more appropriate if he was the current German champion imo. I prefer Greipel's custom Noah:

Have to agree with Flash - German colors seem to be saying he's current German champ. Otherwise, nice graphics.

Man what a sensitive group. He's proud of his country, loves his kids, gives props to his racing careeer, and isn't sensitive to language while having a sense of humor. Chapeau Jens! Fun scheme.

My first reaction when I saw the bike was "That's odd, Jens isn't the German national champ this year."

It's a fine paint scheme. Just think it communicates the wrong message on first glance. I do like the Peace Race dove as a nod to his GDR roots.

Interesting how the comments in the Bike Rumor coverage of this bike went on (and on) about the "MF" decal as well as the usual Trek bashing, but hardly anyone commented on the East German flag motif inside the chainstay.

I thought the MF was in questionable taste, but would have expected a lot more passion about the DDR.

He should have put this quote on the bike:

"If, God forbid, we live to see Mr. Obama president, we will live through a socialist era that America has not seen before, and our country will be weakened in every way."

Wait, sorry, that's Jon Voight, not Jens Voigt. ;)

Yes, there is a difference.

The form of the first is uttered to ones self at someone who is not present, in surroundings high above ground as found in any office tower in any major city.

The form of the second is shouted at someone with whom in direct confrontation with, in surroundings as found at the level of the street in any major city.

Excepting pedigree, money and credentials ascribed to the participants, the underlying sentiment directed at each recipient is identical and interchangeable.

I figured it out...taking letters from each of his kid's names and adding the letters O, F and G, you can spell the word M_THER _UCKIN_. Just substitute a K for the G and you can say it with a German accent.

The OP'er was asked to remove the MF'er shot by the mods. Why I don't want to bash the mods (they do a great job and are probably just trying to keep everyone happy) I am bummed that adults, or even anyone over the age of ten would be bothered so much by a silly word that they cannot bear the sight of it.

Jen is free to have a frame made just like anyone. Should we really have a say in what he decides? Common people he's a rider just like we are.

Regrettable that the photo of the bike with the MF decal was taken down. The photo had journalistic worth in reporting on an actual bike, as built and festooned. That some might find one decoration on that bike in questionable taste is not justifiable cause for censorship - a ludicrous denial of what is real but that some wish away not to see.

torquer
08-15-2013, 09:35 AM
The photo of the offending decal is still easily accessed by anyone interested enough to look for it. I think the mods did allright taking it down; this isn't censorship, since the discussion is contining. (Continuing too long, maybe, but I'm obviously contributing to that anyway.)

In my earlier post I said the decal was in poor taste. By that I meant I wouldn't want to be seen on that bike. And I might question the taste of someone else riding that bike. (If I recognized that rider as Jens he might get a pass.)

Was I offended by the image? Not really, since it's just a bike (Jens' bike, to be sure, but hardly a Times Square billboard.) But it did make me a bit sad, because I see it contributing to the general coarsening of our environment. I don't think I'm a prude (I've used the MF-bomb in conversation when I thought it appropriate) but I do object to people shouting it in public, or wearing it on their tee shirts, or Trek "appropriating" it for commercial advantage.

Just a thought-experiment: what would be the proper reaction if Rahsaan Bahati's bike were to sport a decal featuring the N-word?

The bike is awesome because it is personal. I love his kids names on the top tube and the "shut up leg" (where's the "s'"?) on the down tube. The language is crass I would be a little embarassed to have that on my bike (maybe not a race bike, but definitely a training bike). Either way, you know who's bike it is, which is all I would ever want in my dream bike.

. . .to remove the photo I felt would be objectionable to a reasonable percentage of our membership. She very graciously complied, and as a mod I appreciate it,.

We mods like to think we run a classy neighborhood joint. It may get boisterous at times, but it's also a place where you could bring your family for dinner without worrying that it will end up in a John Wayne movie bar fight while you're trying to eat. In that spirit, loud shouting of obscenities doesn't quite fit in.

We also like to think we allow a lot of discussions here that would get closed down on other forums in short order. It adds to the value for our members without too many sacrifices. While some may not agree with the rules of the house, the fact remains they ARE the rules of the house and we don't feel they are too restrictive.

If you DO want to go someplace on line where graffiti covers the walls and there's a fight every night, well there are plenty of those places online and you can drop in any time. Just don't ask us where they are because we're too busy herding cats here to go hang out in them. :)

This is what I've always heard:

"Anyway, interesting part of the story is that he named it Ciavete (cha-va-tay, from some Italian dialect), which literally means "f*** off", reflecting the feelings he has towards the cancer he was diagnosed with in 2006. At least this is what competitive cyclist as to say. So there's something for language class."
