Anyone know off hand if a force short cage rear der will handle a 30 tooth cog, with a 34 ring up front?
Thx!!

A thirty you just have to try for it has variables from chain length and other variables

I would not recommend a 30 is you use the 30 in back and the big front ring at same time. :bike:

I think 26 or 28 is the limit. I wasn't able to make a 28t work (with 34t up front) and went with a Rival intermediate cage which worked great. The intermediate cage is good up to 32t.

Thanks. My local MEC store had a 12-30 on the shelf, and told me to go ahead and try it, and bring it back for refund if it doesn't work. So will try tonight, but I suspect it'll be a no go.. :(

Pretty sure "standard" SRAM RD's can only handle up to 28t.

Yes. Saw it work in this thread, and it worked for me too. (SRAM Red 2013 mech, 12-30, 50/34).

Really?

I must have missed that. I will have to check it out for my gravel bike build

What cassette is 30t? I only see 32t listed for SRAM cassettes

Shimano Ultegra CS6700 12-30. Works goooed!

The chain doesn't have much slack in 50/30, but it turns fine. I just avoid that combo.

The med cage derailleur isn't that expensive and so much more useful (32 out back with it!).

Agreed. A medium cage would be the optimal choice for 30T and larger, particularly for everyday use. More capacity, better chain tension...probably less stress and wear on things.

For SRAM, is it just the cage length that is different between the short and medium? For campy (older eras at least) that's the case, the cage geometry is the same.

If so, that has no impact on max cog size... Chain wrap, yes, but not max cog size.

That looks kind of scary.. like no room for error. It also kind of looks like there is no room between the derailleur pulley and 30T cog. I'd run a medium cage just for the piece of mind if it was my bike. I got my rival medium cage for $70 or so brand new shipped.

Really? What "error" is going to occur?

Someone's gonna mess with you and swap a 11-34T while you sleep?

Hi all, I tried it last night, a Tiagra 10 speed 12-30 cassette. It actually worked perfectly fine as far as handling the 30, but for some reason I couldn't get it to tune up just perfect. Maybe it is because it wasn't a new chain, it is a KMC that I've been using on an Ultegra cassette for the Summer. Just felt kind of rough, and there was always one or two gears that would be off when the rest were perfect..
Doing a 180km ride this Sunday at Ironman Tremblant (close to 6000 feet of climbing). The 30 would have been nice, but will stick with the 28 and good shifting..

The 'test' is big-big with some 'S' in the chain thru the pulleys. Yep a medium cage is 'ideal' but also $70, that not really needed.

I just put a wi-fli on my road bike and will be giving a maiden voyage any day now.

I recently modified my ride to 11-32 w wifli and a longer chain. Ouch it was expensive mod but very cool once I let go of the price tag. This is the same same set up Contador uses in the mountains. Good luck!

I thought SRAM liked the chain to be straight - I had a chain replace at a shop but it malfunctioned during a charity ride. The mechanic that fixed it removed a link and said the chain was set up for SRAM because the chain was flat when the pulleys were extended fully.
