View Full Version : How NOT to end your Sunday ride

So it was a beautiful day today on Boston's North Shore

Blue skies and just about perfect temperatures but maybe a little breezy

I went for a metric with my friend Lilly, who is buying my Ottrott and we had a great day.....

Until the very end of the ride

About 1/4 mile from home we get passed by an ambulance and police cruiser, lights on heading up the street. We come around the last bend to find the cruiser blocking the road and the ambulance backing into my driveway. There is a second cruiser there plus a fit engine in the driveway. The fire leutenant (sp?) wouldn't tell me anything or let me in my driveway until I explained that this was my f@&$ing house!

At that point he informs me my wife has had a TIA and the EMTs are working her but she seems OK now

So we are at the ER waiting for get to be admitted. Lots of tests tonight and tomorrow. Other than no memory of how she got down to the floor all seems OK.

BIG scare and a warning for her (and me). We'll know more after the tests.

Well wishes to your wife!

My 44 year old co-worker just had a TIA last week. He is a little overweight, not much, smokes cigarettes, and endures a lot of mental stress from work etc. He put in his resignation at work, and within days, had a TIA. He was given an aspirin by a neighbor, and raced to the hospital. His symptom was a numb leg, hand, and slurred speech. Within 15 minutes, he said he felt fine.

They will test her pulse, on her neck, BP, really look into her eyes for cholesterol issues, check her balance, strength in her limbs, and run blood tests. They might do a CT scan or MRI, ultrasound on her neck (looking for clogged arteries), EKG, and stress test. They did all this to him over 2.5 days, they even put a small camera down his throat, looking around.

He was placed on cholesterol medication, he was, and is fine. He was totally bored in the hospital, and here's to hoping that both of you are bored, as the time there is smooth, uneventful, and rudimentary.

Good luck and well wishes.

Hey Bruce,

good luck hope things work out for you and your wife.

Thanks again for the saddle. I haven't been riding my bike much though. I gave myself a umbilical hernia late in June( lifting a lawnmower out of my truck) and finally had surgery last Wed. so things are very sore as of now. Ironically yesterday afternoon I was feeling good enough to take the Raleigh for a spin but it still feels a bit premature. Some soreness there that was ever present halfway into the ride. Interestingly enough I think I may of passed by where you live on the hillside over on Your street. I read K. on the mail box. If I am correct that's a nice area. A lot of woods and quiet but of course people drive way too fast on that road:p

Thanks for all the good thoughts. This is such an great place to vent/share at times and this is why.

Day 1 post TIA update:

She feels "normal" today and all tests so far have been "normal".

She is having a little difficulty swallowing food, but otherwise, no other symptoms.

MRI should be done and she should be on her way back to her room. No feedback yet on that one.

Staying 1 more night at least as they still are saying they want to do an echo plus some other stuff.

I am contemplating getting her a Road ID to wear once we know what meds, etc. are going to be involved.

Also considering a home emergency alert system for when I'm at work or out riding but all she can think of is the TV commercial: "I've fallen and I can't get up!" to which I say - PRECISELY !!

More as it happens....

Glad to hear things are on the right track. However, I'm a little surprised at the quoted bit below. Are the Docs alright with the difficulty in swallowing, etc? Not intending to alarm you, but just surprised me...hope its nothing more than my ignorance.

My Mother wears a medical alert while at home and installed a lockbox on the outside of her door for emergency responders to use.

Swallowing issue was minor and has now cleared up. The doctor said it was "not unusual" to have small issues with swallowing after a TIA or stroke.

They almost sent her home tonight but it got too late.

Hopefully tomorrow is the day

Bruce, do they know what triggers a TIA? Any specific risk factors?

Bruce K
08-13-2013, 03:39 AM
This is my understanding of the sotuation:

A TIA is a brief interuption in the blood flow to the brain, similar to a stroke but very brief (strokes last much longer or can be permanent)

Causes are generally a small blood clot or sometimes a bit of plaque (from cholesterol) blocking a blood vessel in the brain.

If you have a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, or elevated cholesterol then it is my understanding you are more at risk.

Other rarer causes are trauma to the head or neck that leads to ruptures in a blood vessel or a collapse of a small blood vessel.

Been looking to hear how things are working out.

I hope this serves to only push both of you to savor life a little more :)

Bruce K
08-13-2013, 07:21 AM
We're pretty lucky in the "savor life" dept.

Very little we would want to change or do "bucket list" wise. But we're working on it

Definitely some lifestyle changes in the offing: family diet will change (what she does we all do - not fair to "cheat" in front of her), she will need to get on an exercise program with more cardio, meds and supplements for her and I will consult my own MD before jumping on the supplement wagon.

Definite TIA with no obvious cause and no obvious damage.

Coming home around noon
