I'm under two months away from 28 and in the last year I've noticed a swing in my cycling equipment.

-I sold my last non-steel bike
-All my bikes have quill stems
-I've lost intrest in most pre built wheels
-in the name of comfort, I just put on a set of balloonish 25mm tires on my colnago (I've always ridden 22-23mm)
-I want to trade my c02 for a tasteful pump
-I think the $35 "kickstarter" bell rocks

What's next? A compact, comfort geomatry, and panniers?

Most of life, at any age, is about enjoying the ride, not so much about how fast you get there.

Most of those aren't really age related realizations. Maybe maturity based, but not totally tied to age.

Big tires rock.

25 isn't exactly a "slow" size either. enjoy the ride at any speed (and any bike stiffness/utility/weight/etc.)

I agree that it isn't completely tied to age. The post was made in jest, but I do think you will find trends. Most of the guys I know my age are riding carbon or aluminum bikes with 50mm+ rims.

I am excited about the tires. I have obviously used wider tires on my ss cross bike, but that isn't quite the same as a road bike.

I'll start worrying Casey when you show up with a minivan like ours instead off that sweet Porsche.

Till then, carry on. :)

How 'bout a pic of a quill stemmed steel bike with bike tires? That Colnago, maybe?

No minivan ever. I would drive a German station wagon though :)

I don't have a pic with the 25s (mounted to 32 spoke cxp33s) but here it is with the 23s:

the good thing about quill stems is that there are no edges to scratch your knees when standing and rocking the bike!

Whatever gets you out to ride bro. I think a lot of people spend more time worrying about what their sled looks like than actually riding the thing. Carbon, steel, bamboo - it's all fun!

Almost 28? That's practically ancient.

Might was well start selling your bike stuff, because by the time you turn 30 about all you'll need is the wheels which if you're lucky, will match what you need for your wheelchair.

(btw, the year you were born I was in grad school)

Can you get Campagnolo hubs on a wheelchair? Veloflex tires are a given.

Just rode in a BMW 335 GT m-class with a hatchback yesterday.

Unbelievable.

Also, I'll have pics of our 1er when I get back to the States.

Fun car as well.

I'm sure it could be done, but why innovate unnecessarily when Phil Wood is known to supply a superior wheelchair racing hub? 'Aero Sport' version available, runs a narrower axle. Word.

We're semi-joking about this, but I bet the world of wheelchair racing can be just as serious and competitive as bike racing.

You have to feel bad for all the Iraq and Afghanistan vets who've lost or lost use of their legs, but it's good that they can still compete in a serious physical endeavor.

Technically you're right but ironically you're way off on this one because, The 25mm tires are getting to be the new trendy thing. All my lbs has in a high quality roadrace tire size are the 25mm width. More irony I have six year old 23mm Vittoria Diamante Pro's that are almost as wide as my 2013 25mm Continental Gatorskins.I forget the measurements I took for comparison but I recall the difference being very minimal. OK I just took a measurement and have to correct myself. So the vernier readings say they are legit. However I will say the profile of the Vittoria's is shaped in such a way they give the impression of being just as wide as the Gatorskins. Honestly with 100psi in either they both ride pretty much the same as far as high end clinchers go.

Indeed, but would that really be adequate for a gravel ride? ; )

I'm right behind you age-wise, Casey. We should probably not complain.

That said, I've sworn off tires narrower than 25mm, as well as saddle-to-bar drop on one bike.

I switched to 25s last season. Not sure how much is just mental but.... I find the ride to be much smoother.

These bikes do not show "Old Guy" riding positions.

As I said, it was mainly a joke. Absolutely no complaint. I am loving it.

I still like bar drop. Fit wise, both bikes feel perfect. I've got the bad habit of taking the winter months off and I can hop on either bike come spring with no neck or back pain. I used to ride with less reach and I think it has me too scrunched up.

You are getting older and clearly more intelligent...

I hope so

Yeah, very nice.

Tough to cram 6 17 year old soccer players into that one though. :)

That's my current lot in life.

Here's our BMW 1er we are using on the vacation.

I like it!

I'm 56 and I have two Rapha jerseys and...

I bought a Look 585 after reading the raves, built it over a year with 10 speed Record, rode it 5 times and decided that I didn't need it when I also have a Pegoretti Marcelo. Beautiful smooth ride, but apart from weight, not very different, and Peg feels smootherererer.

I don't see a reason to ever own a carbon bike again, at least until the Peg rusts away.

What have I got to look forward too now that bike lust has evaporated?

build the tommasini frame. Pull the current drivetrain, don't sell. Then re-build with 11 speed and some handbuilt light weight rim wheels, use plenty of spokes. rediscover going fast.

I went all-steel for a couple years -- my inner retro-grouch flared up -- but I found I missed having a carbon bike around for what that itch needs to get scratched.

So I've got a Time VXR hanging around (and my sole bike with a compact) for those longer, hillier days in the saddle. No regrets so far.

Something else is at work here.

These issues typically don't crop up until you hit 73.

But German station wagons are cool.......
