For me its the Ocean. Learned how to spearfish for the families dinner before 3nd grade. Have deep sea fished since before 10yo. Spent an entire life learning the habits of the fish we love to eat, whether they are caught with 3/16" hooks tied to bamboo poles on a sandy beach tideline, or night time bottom fished on a drifting small boat at 400 fathoms.

Since I'm now on an injury related sabbatical from riding, there's a new toy in the house.

I'm #83. I race with a couple of different organizations in Southern California. I love being out there, battling at times inches away from other competitors at speed. I race with AP MotoArts, a solid team of about a dozen riders out of Los Angeles. My teammates range in age from 16 to 50, all of us having the fire in our bellies. When I'm out there, I'm not thinking about work, family, any problems. All I'm thinking about is how to get to the next corner as fast as I can without killing myself or the competitors around me. I've had several crashes and broken a few bones (my right wrist bones are fused together as a result of a pretty bad spill in 2008). Still when the flag drops it's about the biggest rush ever trying to get the holeshot into Turn 1.

I used to have a few and actually used them at work a bit (just for kicks). Somewhere around here, or maybe somewhere in storage at work, I have a Parker 51. Unfortunately, I never could get it to flow (or whatever the real word is) quite right.

Louis,

I'd be happy to help if you like. Shoot me a pm or email at cbburton@gmail.com. 51s are classically a dependable pen.

Thanks for the offer, but it's no big deal. ;)

These days I just just the 0.7 and 1 mm gel ink pens they have at work - almost as dark as "real" ink.

Coolsville.

Raced motocross for a number of years. Did okay, but no *real* talent. I raced mostly open class (390 Husqvarna), but also had the 250. Yeah, both with 17.5 Fox Airshox, ported by Uptite.

Hamming it with the 250 (with practice wheels).

Guitars.

Buying them only sometimes as I still fall for the occasional Gibson historic Les Paul, mostly R8s as the tops on R9s to me are less evocative of most true Bursts.

Making them mostly as Gibson set necks in some form. Currently building a SG Les Paul with a burst neck contour & smaller 50's-type headstock. Stainless frets.

Good tone wood is getting very expensive. Madagascar rosewood or ebony fretboards. Not cheap.

Windsurfing. Sailed boats in the S.F Bay with my Father as a child. As a young adult I wanted to continue sailing but the cost associated with buying, trailering, and storing a boat was prohibitive. Enter windsurfing. Lower initial cost and much easier to transport and store. I made my first trip to the Columbia River Gorge in 1985 and was hooked. I lived there a few summers teaching windsurfing as a certified instructor during college. Now, much of my Summer is spent in the Gorge. In the late 1990's I learned of a windy winter destination called La Ventana in Baja. I have been going there in December and January every year since then.

As a bonus, each locale has excellent cycling opportunities. Road cycling and mountain biking in the Gorge and mountain biking in Baja.

Bass guitar.

I used to buy/sell/trade basses at an alarming rate. I usually had 15-20 in my rotating collection at any time. My favorites were the vintage pre-Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray basses from the late 70's. I still have 3 of those, but have had about 30-40 pass through my hands over the years. I now have just seven basses that have been with me for several years and I plan to keep. Five of them are vintage (3 Stingrays and 2 Fender Jazz), and two are more recent reissues ('62 RI Jazz).

From about 8 years ago, here was just the MusicMan part of my collection.

I play in an instrumental surf rock band called The Madeira. If you aren't sure what surf rock is, think of Dick Dale and the soundtrack from Pulp Fiction. Here is a sample of what we do:

The Madeira "Sandstorm" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFnyaCPyJSk)

Next year is our 10th anniversary. It's a lot of fun - we toured Italy a few years ago and California three times.

Intense, the pic with the weapons.

Always wanted to study more practical martial arts, but no time (and no will, obviously). All I have is 8yr of Judo, and 6 yr of tournament experience from 8-16yo. Its helped me many times in the school yard.

And I do *love* classical music. My next visit to America will hopefully coincide with Hilary Hahn's next performace at Davies in San Francisco. :)

It is fascinating to see what else people do - I love this!

Bikes are my main preoccupation, but at risk of sounding sappy, watching my two little ones get big is pretty all consuming and cool too.

Otherwise, cooking gives me lots of pleasure, especially now that my kids are developing a taste for good food versus eating whatever I drop in front of them). Pre-kids, we were avid and intrepid travellers. While living in Europe, we hit the road/airport/whatever at least once per month to various places in Africa, Eastern Europe Scandinavia, Western Europe, USA (we are Canadian, so USA is a destination to us!) and a bit of Asia. AU/NZ is on the horizon in a few years once our kids can travel .

My profession is as an architect, but I do very practical stuff (interior refits mostly), so my design-geek side is an outlet for creativity. I am designing a pendant for my wife as a birth-gift (yes, two years late) at this moment.

Seems like since I joined the Coast Guard I've never lived anywhere that had decent, consistent racing... I figured San Diego would, but not really... At this point technology is way past my knowledge... 1. Coffee. More specifically, the quest for the perfect cappuccino.

2. College basketball. I have been a Marquette season ticket holder for more than 20 years...even though we've lived 4 1/2 hours away for the past 16 seasons. I still get to most of the home games, and occasionally NCAA tournament games. This passion was started early, as my dad was a season ticket holder when Al McGuire coached in the 70s...and I was there in person when we won the 1977 NCAA Championship.

My family is of course the most important of all, but with 17 and 19 year old daughters, I seem to be freed up for my other passions more and more.

I love blue water fishing.
It is just too expensive anymore with diesel at 4.00/gallon and a minimum burn of 100 gallons to get to the Gulf Stream and back. That's in a Bertram 28 with twin Cummins 4BTs at 155 BHP each. But that boat could cruise a good 20 knots when loaded with ice and crew. It wouldn't go any faster but 20 knots is plenty fast off NC.
The don't call it Cape Fear as a joke.
You get out there and the wind whips out of the NE and the seas stack up 10 feet tall in an hour or two.

I don't have any cool pics to share, but I strive to perfect cooking a wide variety of dishes. And unfortunately, my passion for wine means I spend the equivalent of more than a nice custom bike each year on wine. I've also started slack-lining, which it turns out is not great to start when one already has a sprained ankle. But like many others above, my biggest passion nowadays is my family.

I played violin for a long time. I haven't in a while but if I had time I'd play. I used to skip training to play violin (and I'd skip violin to train). I can easily burn 2-3 hours at a time playing the violin.

My violin:

I seem to read whatever I can on WW2 history, especially stuff that happened in Europe. Grew up in Holland near a zoo that had a Sherman tank and a minisub in the playground, bunkers in the woods, and various people that had been part of the war.

I enjoy driving and doing light work on cars. I'd do more but time/money restrict it, and right now I really just drive and do minor maintenance. I try to improve myself in terms of driving like I do cycling. Heel/toe is like double shifting, etc.

I write and read. I blog. I document stuff.

My main passion is our little boy. He's almost 17 months old and an absolute delight.

Just before napping yesterday:

Bike related picture - his onesie was a gift. He's almost outgrown it so I put him in it whenever I can (this was less than a week ago). He just started using the sippy cup and that day he stacked the pieces of PB&J on the cup, drank from the cup while carefully balancing the pieces, then ate the pieces:

Restoring and shaving with these guys. I'm not much for the pretty posed 'magazine' pictures of razors and kit; my best shavers are frequently not the fanciest ones I own, but the ones with the best steel. This one is dated between 1825-1847 (scales not original).

I have a passion for paddling---much more than diving its just that with my bulged disc, I will not be paddling for a while.

Only paddled 6 man outrigger canoes for one season, but our boat won our division for regatta season (inshore, closed course). We made the front page pic of the local newspaper!

Been paddling offshore in Surf Skis since the late 80's. The only pic I have is this Tom Conner (legendary Molokai outrigger canoe steerer) C-Ski. The is the second out of two carbon Skis he's built for me. Have owned four of his boats.

Will probably get *another* Epic V10 if/when I start padding again. The current designs are quite a bit longer with much less wetted surface area (yum). The carbon paddle below weighs 1.25lb.

C-Ski---19' long/23-24lb (mid 90's design).

Craft beer is big with me, my Facebook page has an album with "Beers I been Drinking". Partial to Porters and Stouts but summers aren't a good time for that, so going more IPA right now. Send me more Pliney!

Tequila is good, but been awhile.

Kites (2 line stunt) once in awhile, I have probably a dozen or so, including an original Maui team kite.

Big fan of alternative music too.XM Alt Nation blares in my shop. Neighbors tolerate it because I fix their bikes and do woodworking for them.

I have been sailing longer than serious cycling. My summers tend to alternate between serious cycling summers or serious sailing summers as I find it difficult to get both in as much as I would enjoy. While sailing is my primary water sport/activity, although I am not enjoying sea kayaking. This is a 16ft wooden boat, somewhat of a rarity in boating but like steel bikes has a following all its own.

I'm pretty much all in with photography these days. When I was riding a lot, I had two hobbies related to it - riding and bike gear. Two separate hobbies but definitely inter-related. With photography its pretty much the same thing. I love doing photography, processing my work, the whole thing. But I also like camera gear. I even make a small amount writing about camera gear - not a living but enough to support the hobby. A better camera won't make me a better photographer any more than a better bike would make me a better rider, but I love the gear also, as a pursuit/interest in itself.

I shoot a TON. Lots of street photography and scenic/architectural stuff when I'm in an area conducive to it. Just spent a month on the Amalfi Coast in Italy (perhaps I should add travel to my list, but I can't do that nearly often enough to call it a hobby!). Just finished up a book of photos from that trip:

http://www.blurb.com/b/4494867-amalfi-coast-2013

I have a couple of guitars hanging on my walls and a few bikes hanging in the basement. I don't ride or play much anymore, but too strong a connection to both to stop altogether. But once you've done something at a certain level its really tough to keep doing it at a significantly lesser level once you realize you don't have the dedication to maintain your skills/conditioning to the extent you did when it was a primary passion.

I was heavily into B&W film photography from grade school days through college and into young adult-hood and then basically gave it up to have a family and career and just took family snapshots for about 25 years. Then I got back into it (digital is a whole lot easier to get set up for than darkroom work used to be!) about 3 1/2 years ago, and now I'm totally immersed.

Asheboro, NC. It's a cool weather/winter bouldering area, due to the many sloping egg-shaped boulders there (12+ acres!). The gription is so much better in cold temps! That problem is called "asheboro's steepest" V5, since it is a rare (for asheboro) overhanging problem. Here's another from there, "welcome to asheboro" V4. Kind of a highball but there is a short downclimb on the opposite side, after hand traversing the horizontal crack to the right.
