I just went back to my TRP CR950's on my cx bike from 8.4's, and installed the inplace adjust road cartridge's to try and firm up the stopping power from the old traditional pads. lo and behold, because I'm running 23mm wide rims, I can't seem to get the pads to strike the rim on the from wheel, drive side. (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=133425)

swapped some older, worn pads on to see if that might help, to no avail. So I'm at a bit of an impasse.. I want to run the canti's because I couldn't deal with the narrow tolerance of the 8.4's, but I want them to stop better than they did with the old pads, and work with the wide rims..

anybody have any suggestions? willing to look at a different canti set up altogether (paul's, maybe?)

I have used TRP EuroX and now Paul Neo/touring combo on Velocity A23 rims without issue. The initial setup of cantis drives me to alcoholism regardless of manufacturer though. If I had 4 arms . . .

Have you tried em with koolstop thinline pads?

Wider rims than the DT465 would put the brake pad post closer to horizontal (stock salmon pads) on the Neo Retro, which I was told is the ideal. Ymmv.

i have a23s on my crosshairs and replaced my paul touring cantis with campy cx cantis. work great so far although i haven't tested them in wet weather yet.

I've been OK using Avid Shorty Ultimates with 303 Firecrests. they're somewhere around 25-26mm wide.

not yet -- i suppose I'll go the pad route before completely giving up on these. I know the pads will fit, as the traditional pads fit just fine last year, so I guess we'll see how they stop.

biggest thing is I use the bike for year round commuting, and last year got a little sketchy coming down the big hill on the way home in the rain..

the pads i use on my (really kinda crappy) Avid Shorty 4's are just jagwire cheapos from the LBS, usually red, usually not cartridge/switchable ones. i found the same problem trying to stick in mountain pads after a particularly gritty commute in february, but the mountain pads were too thick and i couldn't get it to set up. turns out, i could switch out the spacer washers/cylinders on the threaded posts in order to get the pad closer to the rim without the arms being totally out of whack. works. the rim is velocity A23. the commute is slushy toronto. yeehaw!

I've had perfectly good luck with my Avid Ultimates, but as others have pointed out, there's the question of the pads and the question where the mounting studs are. FWIW, I've had no need to go to thin-line pads with the ultimates, 23mm wide rims, and wherever Enve stuck the studs on their cross fork.
