Did anyone catch yesterday's stage? I missed it and luckily Eurosport 2 replayed it again today. Phinney's been very inconsistent ever since his move to BMC, but what a win for him and what a finish! That was very close and Phinney finally showed some strategic oomph to complement his massive engine (I refer of course to his terribly timed attacks in previous grand tours and the odd attack he put on at Paris Roubaix).

He's had a very strong Tour de Pologne, leading out Hushovd to a win the previous stage and now a stage win against moderately strong competition (I say moderate because most GC guys are trying to get in shape for the Vuelta, not race).

Awesome Phinnish! Local boy makes good. By my count, there are four, (U.S.), future Classics/Grand Tour winners in Phinney, Kalinsky, Stetina, and Van Garderen. :hello:

I wouldn't criticize him for P-R performance as he was bait. His performance storming the line at Milan-San Remo was impressive. He's got a great record already with his prologue/TT wins in many races. I am certain he'll continue to do well in those races as well as many stages for a strong man.

I don't buy the GC guys are just tryiing to get in shape for the Vuelta - those were sprinters chasing him.

He's a great kid from a great family. I wish I were in Colorado this week to honor his dad at the Copper Triangle, but I'm sweating it out here in D.

It's even more awesome that he rode off the front at 7.7km to go, and held it.

honestly, the best thing he did was getting off the his previous team (which I will not name) it takes time and development to grow in this sport...real results will come.

Seriously!
I've only seen the last couple of K, but riding off the front of what I assume was a peleton spooling up for a sprint finish is an amazing bit of pure power pedaling.

I woke up my napping 2 week old by howling at that finish. Too awesome!

I saw his power profile posted somewhere after that stage. He held something like 900 watts to get away, and TT'd in at 550 or some similar ridiculous figure to get to the finish.
