Doesn't look like a ride report thread started yet for this weekend...oh wait...toddler wants to push banana button...

So I lead training rides every weekend. This summer I committed to helping the honoree for my event train. She has arthritis and she is also blind so we've been riding my tandem all summer. To help her gauge her effort, she likes to know how close we are to the top of the hill. Today, I called one out for her and said "I see the top of the hill Barb" and she quipped "but you're near-sighted!"

Wait...he's back...

When she said that, I was already working pretty hard and started laughing pretty uncontrollably...not exactly the thing you wanna do when climbing.

We got her a cateye inou camera because she was able to retain a tiny bit of sight in one eye. She can't see anything when we're riding, but can go back later to blow up the pictures on her computer screen and slowly look them over.

You got it...she is a really amazing person. Just did the SeaFair triathlon this last weekend with the assistance of a sighted guide. She shouldn't run anymore due to the arthritis in her ankle, but she hates being told she shouldn't do things...just got back from a trip to Switzerland...one paragliding company said they wouldn't take her...so she called around until she found one that would.

I normally don't post on the weekend threads, as usually for me it's a slog thru the heat and humidity that is Summer in Arkansas. Read that: just trying to make it thru the 50 - 70 miles and not melt.

That is, until TODAY.

Pretty unusual to have these conditions in July here. Got on the road about 7:40 AM. Sixty-six degrees, low humidity, a high overcast (no bright sun) and light northeast breeze of 5 - 8 miles per hour. Felt pretty amazing.

Did 57 solo miles this morning in three hours and four minutes,,,that's with a bit of climbing. Decided to go back out this afternoon and get 24 more miles on a shortened version of the morning's loop.

Now there's rain in the forecast over the next three to four days, so not sure how this week will pan out, mileage-wise, but 81 miles in these conditions was a great start.

Stay safe out there.

Pretty cool Tai.

Wife and I rode tandem yesterday for about 3 hours, including a quick stop at a RC air park.

Quick 1.5 hour ride today. Nothing special but glad to be out.

i think jack said it best. i'm trying to think of words to describe how awesome it makes me feel that you're out there, blasting around on a tandem with someone enjoying the ride behind you like you are. the paragliding story and picture really throw it over the top. i dont care what the news says, humanity is alive and well, and there are lots of good people plugging away out there ever day.

if tai runs for president, you've got your first vote right here.

Good for you Tai.

It's been cold here, but I forced myself out this evening hoping the wind would settle down a bit. I wanted to ride the wheel I built last night. Started with 3 layers, shed the top one after 8 miles or so. I continued on my mission to ride every road in the county. I have to ride 10 or 12 miles now to get to one I haven't ridden. I ended up with 43 miles, maybe 1/3 of it gravel. Met one car and got passed once.

Thanks all...I started leading these rides back in 2007. Remember coming out the first year all kitted out on a sweet road bike thinking I was gonna get some mileage in, but spent a lot of time rolling at 8mph wearing out brake pads and waiting at the side of the road. Those 8mph people kept at it and eventually became 18mph people. They'd break down these huge mental barriers to make huge gains on fitness and happiness. Yes...the vibrancy of humanity is alive and well...I soak it in hanging around these folks and wanted to share it with you all.

Dude I used your water bottles this weekend and so many times thought about people who suffer from pain. Keep up the good work my friend.

I got a good friend out for a ride on Saturday. She hadn't been on a bike in years, but she's a trooper. We rode 40 miles, and she averaged about 13 mph on her 26" wheeled "comfort" bike. She called me about an hour after our ride was done saying she was "on a high" from the ride and couldn't wait to get out again. Pretty cool!

On Sunday, I got together with a few friends and rode the Fullerton Loop, a popular 12 mile MTB trail ride that follows some horse trails through the City of Fullerton. It's not a technical trail, but it serves as a good workout ride.

They shot a scene from Electric Boogaloo here. When it was a hot dog stand owned by a Japanese family. God Bless America.

Don't worry, not another banal car advert on the WPA-built 6th Street Bridge.

Post that hot dog stand pic in the photo tag thread and give it jump start.

It's no longer a hot dog stand. It's a taco joint that also sells what some people in LA call TJ Dogs:

http://s3-media2.ak.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/8LhwcgUX1ABGXf4scbuBRA/l.jpg

When it was a hot dog stand they only sold hot dogs, chili dogs and corn dogs. From the 40s to the 60s, Boyle Heights had one of the largest, if not the largest, Japanese-American communities in the US.

My only ride this weekend was following this little guy around the neighborhood, 6th day is a row the boy road the 1 mile loop, not bad for a 3 year old.

Awesome...he's got all sorts of additional rolling resistance from those training wheels. He's also losing a lot of watts by sitting upright, low-end bearings, and poor tire choice. So his actual effort is probably more akin to a 10 mile ride! Won't be long before he puts his old man in the pain cave...my five year old is already telling me how he's gonna' kick my butt.

My first of two allotted weekly 2mi rides. Of course I cheated and rode 5mi. Mariachi SS and Randonneur Hyper 38, which will be transferred to the Black Mountain this week.

Crazy weather around here.
Got in 12 miles of singletrack on my Cannondale f6 Saturday.

Sunday, 2 degrees from a record low temp, I got in 102 miles on a MXL I got from mjb266 this winter. Regretfully only my second ride on it but wow! great riding bike. It didn't want to go slow and on almost every corner I think I could have taken a few mph's faster. The bike just glides.

I was in Long Beach this weekend and went for a fifty mile ride with the Lightning Velo A/B group. I was a little worried about hanging with the A guys, but did ok on the flats and kinda sorta kicked a little tiny bit of butt on the hills. Fun fun fun day with new friends.

Loving the travel bike!!

MY sixty miles on single track was tough, suffered like a dog, but love my Purist bottles from the Tai man. 9400 feet was not as cool. Second day was 7K. Maybe first well whatever I won't cuss here because were special., F....

Thanks. The gold is from the 40K road race and the bronze is from the 20K road race. I don't have a TT bike.
