Had big plans this morning to do a ride. Started off at around 8:30 with air temps in the 60s, but forecasts for a beautiful summer day.
Headed into Norwich, VT and up Beaver Meadow Road, a long (but not too steep hill) climb gaining 900+ ft in 6 miles. Climbed up that hill, out of the Connecticut River Valley and descended down into the White River Valley at Sharon, VT -- one of the nicest descents I've had in a long time. Good sight lines, good pavement, not too much traffic at that time. Riding along the White River, I could still see some damage from Hurricane Irene a few years back.
Headed east along VT14 to Hartford and then crossed the White River and climbed Pomfret Hill and descended down into Woodstock, VT. By this time, the weather was warming up and I was really enjoying the ride. Took the flat route to Quechee along the Ottauquechee River, checking in on the work they're doing on the Covered Bridges damaged in the hurricane.
Started to feel a few twinges of bother in my knee, and got worried about tendonitis/overtraining, so I aborted my plans to climb one last signficant hill, and just headed for home.
I stopped at the farmer's market on the way and picked up a few cookies for fuel and made my way back spinning a pretty easy gear.
Overall, 59.8 miles, 4,046 ft of climbing, 4 hour 30 minutes of saddle time. Can't ask for much better.
Here are some pictures from the Pomfret Climb. One of my favorites around here.
