View Full Version : I'm kind of ashamed, but I did it, and it was cool.

I'm not proud. I'm kind of ashamed, but I did it, and it was cool. I went out riding in bib shorts with no jersey.

Instead of riding this morning, I had to go late this afternoon. I checked the weather and the "feels like" temperature was 104. I thought, you know what, I going to ignore the taboo and just not wear a jersey. It was still wicked hot outside, but I was way cooler than I would have been with a jersey on. Anyone else do this when temperatures are extreme?

I am sure people are now scarred for life.

I sometimes wear only my bibs into the kitchen, because my kids laugh and laugh. But that's as far as I'm willing to go.

Oh man you are either brave or shameless. I can barely stand the sight of myself in just a bib!

Ya know, wearing a bath robe is really comfortable but I don't go out in a bath robe.

You truly are brave or shameless. Ride what's comfortable and hope no relatives see you on your ride!

Where did you keep the stuff you normally put in your jersey pocket??? Or do I not want to know?

hey man, whatever gets you out there is cool with me.
remember texas is texas.

next time, when it's really hot, try it the other way: a jersey and no bibs. i think you'll feel much more refreshed.

. . . then it was OK.

If you do NOT look like this, then you could be in big trouble. There will be FIVE forum mods at the Rhode Island Red Ramble on Saturday and we may have to convene the "Mods Star Chamber" to devise some suitably tortuous punishment for you!

Should try that because I think I look pretty cool in just bibs. Be neat to show off some of that Assos turquoise.

Next time be sure to have a handlebar mustache to complete the old-timey strongman look.

I usually just carry a cell phone in my jersey pocket (in a plastic bag to protect from sweat). I just tucked it in the front of the bib about navel level, and it rode there comfortably.

As for the rest of the comments, I guess I'll choose brave over shameless. That said, with my glasses and helmet, I'm not sure anyone really recognized me anyway. Oh, and I'm not has hot as the Assos girl, but my wife thinks I'm pretty cute in my bibs. :)

Heart rate strap, or no?

Yes, HR strap. And as you might imagine, my pulse was very high from the heat even though I tried to take it easy.

Just to be clear, I don't think I'll ever go out with just the HR strap.

This is so topical! On Wednesday it was about 80 when I left work to ride over towards Fenway for the sox game. I was riding down an empty Beacon Street at about 20mph on my commuter with fenders/pannier, feeling good because I was catching all the lights green. All of a sudden a guy blows by me on my left going roughly 28mph on Gunnar with panniers wearing bibs and NO JERSEY. In downtown Boston. I literally started laughing out loud.

Good for you. If you like it, enjoy it. Do it. As long as there are no children involved under the age of 16, (saying because 16 is legal in Oklahoma, as to not offend people in OK).:banana:

Two comments, veering in opposing thread drift vectors:
I thought about the HRM strap issue, too, 'cause during our recent spell of awfull weather I saw a shirtless teenager with just the strap, and wondered how he would explain the resulting tan line. The bib-top/strap combo might result in a sunburst motif, if done right.
And speaking of Texas, I saw Lyle Lovett last weekend, who's been playing in the NYC area during that same spell of weather, and he remarked that it really made him appreciate the weather back home.

See post #23 above.

I'm still thinking about what to do today. Today's afternoon temp should be over 100 again. Maybe I'll just swim today.

I have seen this on two occasions. Awful! Just awful! It could top 200 degrees and I would not ride shirtless. If you are "cool" with it then let your freak flag fly!

Yowza - the temp's not the only thing that's hot down in Texas...

I'm pretty sure Borat is smart enough not to show up dressed like that in TX. That picture had to be taken in CA or FL.
