View Full Version : How is a Bicycle made?
Had to pass this video along to fellow forumites -- This is an amazing video from the 1940s that shows how each component of a bicycle (not just frmae and fork) is manufactured.

Very cool - thanks for posting this. The seamless bottom bracket process is interesting in and of itself.

Very interesting indeed. This must have been produced to promote post-war bicycle consumption.
Comments:
1. I really like the truing machine, with its triple live indicators
2. The spoke machine is really cool, too
3. Interesting to see such vertical integration... a different era
4. I'm amazed that dip enamel can result in a nice glossy (and drip-free) finish
5. Too bad they skipped through fork manufacturing: that would have been fascinating
Question:
1. Why are the seat stays assembled separately?

It was dependent on the model. City bikes and lower level frames had seat stays that were fastened at the drop out and used the seat binder bolt to attach at the top. Fairly common at the time, and some Dutch and Pigeon style frames are still made this way.
In the video you can see some higher end frames with attached seat stays brazed in position.
