With my first true SS/fixie frame, trying to learn a couple things. My frame is 120 rear, so can only use track hubs, learned that one. Questions are:

1. Flip flop hubs, means can run SS freewheel on one side and fixed cog on other?

2. I have a Shimano SS freewheel that coasts silently. Being someone that likes hubs as loud as Zipps, are there any freewheels substantially louder than Shimano?

Thanks for info.

1. Yes. Flip Flop means riding SS on one side and Fixed on other.

2. If you plan on riding it a lot or in bad weather, get a White Industries freewheel. Definitely worth the money IMHO and it makes the sound you want.

"Flip flop" means dual sided, but can have fixed/fixed, fixed/free or free/free sides depending on the hub. Lock ring threads (on one both, one, or none of the sides) will be the give away.

White Industries makes a very nice single speed freewheel. It is not loud. But it not silent either.

Another vote for White Industries. I have one on my Pogliaghi and it's a very nice freewheel.

The shimano freewheels are close to junk. Like everyone has said the white industries are the way to go. I do not think there is any serious competition. They may seem expensive, but they are worth it.

I support everyone above. Any consern about the price of the white industries freewheel will disappear when you get it out of the box.

Of if you go to re-sell it... I think I got $50 for one that I had used on a MTB for a couple of years. : )

White Industries is the standard, but the higher end ACS freewheels are pretty good. As noted flip/flop just means dual sided. You can run a freewheel on a fixed side but not the other way around. I run a freewheel and a fixed cog/lockring on my fixed/fixed hub.
